High Learning Commission

The Higher Learning Commission is one of six accrediting agencies in the United States that provide institutional accreditation on a regional basis. Institutional accreditation evaluates an entire institution and accredits it as a whole. Other agencies provide accreditation for specific programs. As a part of its continued accreditation, ECC participated in an Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP) checkup visit in November, 2009.

AQIP is the accreditation process through which East Central College maintains its accredited status with the Higher Learning Commissionof the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Through AQIP, ECC demonstrates that it meets the Higher Learning Commission's Criteria for Accreditation while integrating the principles and benefits of continuous improvement into the culture of the College to assure and advance the quality of higher education.

Accreditation determines ECC’s eligibility for participation in federal (Title IV) and state financial aid programs. Proper accreditation is also important for the acceptance and transfer of college credit to four year colleges and universities.

During the 2009 site visit, peer reviewers verified the accuracy of ECC’s Systems Portfolio and reviewed with college employees several action projects and strategies identified to capitalize on the strengths as well as opportunities for improvement. The visit also was an opportunity to assure the college's continuing organizational quality improvement commitment and confirm the institution's compliance with accreditation expectations. In early 2010 the College received feedback from the visiting team indicating ECC is in compliance with the Higher Learning Commission’s Criteria for Accreditation and with the Federal Compliance Program. ECC received official notification of the reaffirmation of accreditation earlier this year.

East Central College has been accredited since 1972.
