Fine Art and Graphic Design Department Mission

The East Central College Fine Art and Graphic Design Department's mission is to provide a strong foundation rooted in the principles of art and design and foster a creative atmosphere fundamental to life long learning in which a student develops mastery of skills and techniques, develops critical and creative approaches to problem solving that are communicated in a visual context as well as in written and verbal format, becomes socially aware of trends and traditions of the larger art world both past and present in preparation for transfer.

 

Fine Art and Graphic Design Department Goals

Graduates of this program should be able to demonstrate the following art specific tasks, as well as implement ECC’s Common Learning Objectives: • Be ethical and socially responsible • Be able to communicate effectively in a written and verbal manner • Be able to think critically and creatively to solve problems and advance solutions • Demonstrate proficiency in the basic artistic materials, techniques and principles of art and design • Understand major art and design works from the past, the styles they represent, and their significance for artists today • Discuss and analyze major issues facing the art and design world today • Select and prepare works for exhibition • Prepare a comprehensive portfolio that demonstrates competence in all areas of art and design foundations

 

Graphic Design

Students interested in a career in a graphic design field will find opportunity for study available at East Central College. This area of study combines traditional art fundamentals with cutting-edge technology and prepares practitioners who use a variety of print and electronic media to meet a client’s communication or marketing needs. Students will explore coursework leading to an Associate of Applied Science degree intended to prepare them to enter the workforce in a variety of capacities.

 

The fast pace of today’s high tech world means it is more important than ever that messages be communicated clearly and effectively. The program utilizes a computer-based lab on a Macintosh platform, and includes computers that are the state of the art in the industry. Software used in the program is that which students can expect to use on the job. To complement the computer-based portion of the program students can expect to study the principles that apply to all visual communication.

 

Multimedia

Students interested in a career in a multimedia field will find opportunity for study available at East Central College. This area of study combines traditional art fundamentals with cutting-edge technology and prepares practitioners who use a variety of traditional and electronic media to meet a client’s communication or marketing needs. Students will explore coursework leading to an Associate of Applied Science degree, intended to prepare them to enter the workforce in a variety of capacities. Technology is key to the world of multimedia. The program utilizes a computer-based lab on a Macintosh platform, and includes computers that are the state of the art in the industry. Software used in the program is that which students can expect to use on the job. Students will also have access to some of the top equipment used in fields such as digital video, sound design and animation. To complement the computer-based portion of the program, students can expect to study the principles that apply to all visual communication.
