Karen S. Wieda Scholarship Karen Wieda

The Karen S. Wieda scholarship has been established to honor Karen’s dedication to East Central College and the thousands of students she served during her tenure at the college. There could be no better tribute to her lifetime commitment to education than an endowed scholarship in her name.

A graduate of Jefferson College, Karen was one of the first employees hired by founding President Dr. Donald D. Shook in 1969. Her first position was faculty secretary, but she was soon promoted to Registrar by then Dean of Students, Dr. Jim Selby. She has served under every East Central president since that time.

Anyone who knows Karen will attest to her strength of character and her dedication to East Central College. She leads by example through her quiet grace, poise, and vast knowledge. As Registrar, she took innovative steps to improve student services and in 2006 she was recognized by the Missouri Community College Association with the Technology Innovation Award for adopting an electronic document imaging system. MCCA also awarded her the Administrative Professional Leadership Award in 2011.

Karen has been a long-time member of the Missouri and National Associations for College Admission Counseling, serving on the Missouri association’s executive committee and as historian on several occasions. Her counterparts across the state note that Karen has always been ready to step in and help with projects of any kind and is an admired colleague. Several stated that there is no finer person in the profession.

Karen serves quietly, consistently, and competently, maintaining a calm and balanced demeanor. Her outlook is positive and her personality is kind and loving. She has been the foundation of the student service operation at East Central for 44 years and this scholarship will provide a means of continuing her legacy by assisting deserving students in obtaining an education and bettering their lives.
