Attendance Policy

Medical Absence Procedure

Attendance Policy Because East Central College believes that learning is an interactive process, students are expected to attend classes regularly. Instructors distribute written class attendance policies at the beginning of each new class. Faculty or administrators at East Central College may administratively withdraw a student from a class if a student violates the expressed, written attendance policy as stated in the course syllabus for the class. Faculty will submit the appropriate paperwork to the Registrar, and the student will be notified in a timely fashion. Such withdrawal will result in a grade of (W) through the 12th week. After the 12th week, the grade will be assigned at the discretion of the instructor.

For students with frequent absences, a faculty member may elect to use the Student Excessive Absence report, but the faculty member is not required to report any student for excessive absence prior to the use of the Administrative Withdrawal.

Any student who feels that the administrative withdrawal was executed unfairly or inaccurately can appeal the withdrawal within 10 calendar days of notification. Students must submit a written statement of the appeal to the College’s Chief Academic Officer (Executive Vice President of Instruction).

Medical Absence Procedure

Students who are absent due to a medical condition or hospitalization are advised to speak to an academic advisor or counselor to discuss academic and personal safety issues. Depending on the circumstances, the student may be asked to provide documentation from a physician before returning to campus.
