General Information

  1. Where is The Learning Center located?

    It’s on the first floor of the newly renovated AD building (map) - come enjoy our new space! 

     

  1. What are hours of The Learning Center?

    When classes are in session during spring and fall, we are open Mondays through Thursdays 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Fridays 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. During the summer we close at noon on Fridays. We are closed Saturdays and Sundays. When classes are not in session, The Learning Center is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Last tests are handed out 1 hour before we close, no exceptions. 

     

  1. What subjects can I get help in?

  1. How do I make an appointment for a tutor or study room?

    Call 636/584-6688 or stop by the front desk to make an appointment.

     

  1. Where can I fax?

    Registration will allow students to fax for a small fee.

     

  1. Where is the Reading Center?

    The Reading Center has moved to CC 125.

     

  1. Why do I need to log in and out every time?

    Logging in and out each time you enter The Learning Center is important for many reasons. One, it allows us to keep track of our busy times so we can hire the appropriate number of tutors. Two, it gives the students a way to communicate to staff any concerns they may have with the center. Three, it helps us justify the need for more services such as computers, space, and staff.

     

  1. What should I do if I have a problem with a tutor or specialist?

    If the problem you are having is with a tutor, inform the Associate Director of the Learning Center or a specialist. If the problem you are having is with a specialist, inform the Learning Center Coordinator or the Associate Director of The Learning Center.

     

  1. Can The Learning Center help me if I have a learning disability?

    Yes. We will be glad to help you just like any other student to the best of our ability. The same Learning Center policies apply as far as time limit of a tutoring session and what we can and cannot do. We are able to offer tutoring, but we cannot serve as a scribe. A scribe can be obtained through the ACCESS Services office, located on the first floor of the HS Building. If a scribe is needed, he/she must accompany the student to the tutoring session.

     

Computer Questions

  1. Where can I print in color?

    There is no option for color printing on campus. The nearest place for color print is UPS.

     

  1. Is there a cost for printouts?

    Printouts are currently free, but we do request that students only print what they need. You will need to pick up a print card from the staff desk before printing.

     

  1. Where is the copier located?

    The copier is located across from The Learning Center desk.

     

  1. How much do copies cost? 

    Copies are 10¢ each.

     

  1. Where can I find a scanner?

    We have a scanner in The Learning Center, just ask at the front desk and we can point you to the specific computer.

     

  1. I have my own laptop, can I get online?

    Yes, you will need to know your eCentral username and password. The front desk has the code you will need to set up the wireless access. The IT desk or many of the Learning Center staff can assist you in getting it set up.

     

  1. What is my username and password for my email account?

    You can look up your username by going to the eCentral page, click on “Students”, under “User Account” choose “What’s my userid”. Type in the requested information, choose “Submit” and the system will return your userid.

     

    Your password is known only to you, and if you forget it you'll have to reset your password. Choose “What’s my password” instead of “what’s my userid”. Select “I don’t remember, reset my password.”. You’ll type in the requested information and if you have another email account set up with East Central College, your temporary password will be sent to you.

     

    If you do not have another email registered, you will need to come to The Learning Center or the IT Help Desk in the CC building with a photo id to have your password reset and get your temporary password.

 

  1. What is my username and password for my Moodle account?

    Your username and password should be the same as your East Central Email account. See “What is my username and password for my email account?”

 

 

Testing Questions

  1. What are the Testing Center hours? When is the last test handed out?

    When classes are in session, the Testing Center is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm. On Friday, the hours are 7:30 am to 2:00 pm. When classes are not in session, the hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm and Friday from 7:30 am to 2:00 pm. No tests are handed out with less than one hour of operating time remaining. For instance, on an evening when closing time is 7:30 pm, no test will be handed out after 6:30 pm.

     

  1. Do I need to bring any identification?

    Yes, whenever you come to the Testing Center to take an exam, you must present your ECC student ID, a state driver license, a government ID, or other photo id.

     

  1. Do I need an appointment?

    Most testing is on a walk-in basis. Some special testing requires an appointment, such as placement retakes, CLEP, or taking a proctored exam for another institution.

     

  1. What should I bring?

    Bring a photo ID, something to write with, a calculator if allowed, and any other materials your instructor recommends or requires for your exam.

     

  1. What items are prohibited inside the testing room?

    No personal belongings are allowed. No cell phones, pagers, MP3 players, laptop computers, or any other electronic device is allowed, with the exception of a calculator when specified. (Calculators may be inspected by Testing Center staff.) No books, notes, or extra paper is allowed unless specified by the instructor.

     

  1. Where do I put my backpack, purse, or other personal belongings?

    Lockers are available for your belongings.

     

  1. What kinds of tests are administered in the Testing Center?

    The Testing Center administers a variety of tests. For regular coursework, an instructor may place make-up exams or retake exams on file. An instructor may require that you take an online exam for a web-based course in the secure environment of the Testing Center. CLEP exams, proctored exams for other institutions, and placement retake exams and challenge exams are also administered in the Testing Center, for more information go to the Testing Services website.

     

  1. Do I take all of my tests in the Testing Center?

    Most regular coursework exams will be given in class. Some online classes require you to take your exams in a secure environment, i.e. the Testing Center. Typically, only make-up or retake exams are taken in the Testing Center.

     

  1. How will I know if my test is to be taken in the Testing Center?

    Check with your instructor to determine if your exam is to be taken in the Testing Center.

     

  1. Are tests timed?

    Some tests are timed. You will probably know this before you come to take your test. A good rule of thumb is to check with your instructor ahead of time.

     

  1. Does the Testing Center supply Grademaster cards? (Scantrons)

    The Testing Center has Grademaster cards for sale

     

  1. What is the cost of taking a test in the Testing Center?

    For most exams, testing is free. In some cases, there is a $20 administration fee as of August 1st, e.g. CLEP tests or proctored exams for other institutions. If you are taking an Accuplacer retake, the fee is $15.

     

  1. Does the Testing Center proctor exams for other institutions?

    Yes, the Testing Center does proctor exams for other institutions on an appointment basis. Arrangements must be made in advance. A $20 administration fee is charged per exam.

     

  1. Does the Testing Center give the GED/C-Base/ACT tests?

    None of these tests are administered in the Testing Center. To schedule the GED call 636/584-6532. C-Base exams are offered five times a year in approximately September, November-December, January, March, and June. Call 636/584-6688 to register for the CBASE. To schedule an ACT exam visit their website at http://www.actstudent.org/ .

     

  1. What happens if I am retaking a portion(s) of the C-BASE Test?

    When you sign up for the C-BASE Test, let the staff members know if it is a retake. Retakes are given at the same time but may be in a different room from first-time test takers. Check with TLC if you are unsure where your test will be administered.

     

  1. What if I need a scribe or a reader for my exam?

    Readers and scribes are provided through the office of the ACCESS counselor. Individual arrangements must be made in advance. These services are NOT provided by the Testing Center.

     

  1. What must I do if I want to take a CLEP exam?

    A good place to start if you are interested in a CLEP exam is to check out the information on www.collegeboard.com/clep. Once you have determined which CLEP you want to take, be sure to verify its acceptability with the institution where you want the CLEP credit applied. Call or stop by the Testing Center to make an appointment for your CLEP exam or for more information regarding the administration of the CLEP.

     

  1. How long will it take for my assessment test(s) to be scored?

    Results for all parts of the test are instantaneous.

     

  1. What do my placement results mean?

  1. Where do I sign up for tests?

    To sign up for the placement test, go to the Admissions Office.  To sign up for the GED test, go to Registration .  Both offices are located in the Training Center on the south side of campus. For all other tests, sign up at the reception desk in The Learning Center.

     

  1. What is the C.A.A.P.?

    C.A.A.P. stands for Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency. This test is required for all students receiving an Associate of Arts (A.A.), Associate of Science (A.S.), and Associate of Arts in Teaching (A.A.T.) degree from East Central College. The objective test subjects are rotated each year between Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Critical Thinking. The test takes approximately one hour.

     

  1. What is the Work Keys?

    The Work Keys Test is required for all students receiving an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.), Certificates of Specialization, and Certificates of Acheivement, one-year certificate, or two-year certificate. The objective test subjects given are: Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics, and Locating Information. The test takes approximately three hours.

     

  1. What is the CLEP Test?

    C.L.E.P. stands for College Level Examinations Program. This test is available for students who wish to test out of a class to complete their degree program sooner.

     

  1. What is the Freshman Assessment Test?

    The Freshman Assessment test is also known as the placement test. It is used to determine what level of English or math would be most appropriate for each incoming student. The test itself is called Accuplacer, a test developed by College Board, who also makes the SAT, TOEFL and CLEP tests. Accuplacer is a series of untimed computer-adaptive tests in math and English.
