HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR HISTORY
1982 - 1983
The National Association for Remedial/Developmental Studies in Post-Secondary
Education (NARDSPE) was formed in 1976 to improve the educational experiences of underprepared students and to serve as a network for educators of these students. Anita McDonald, University of Missouri-St. Louis, was an instrumental member of the group which got the organization off the ground.
May Garland and Anita McDonald inspired the beginnings of MRADE as a Midwest affiliate of
NARDSPE, and they organized the first MRADEmeeting October 22, 1982 in St. Louis,
Missouri. Conference participants voted to affiliate with NARDSPE. May served as the first
MRADE president while Anita served that year as treasurer of NARDSPE. When MRADE began, it was the first regional association of NADE composed of more that one state. MRADE consisted of membership from five states: Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, andNebraska. MRADE dues were set at $5.00.
The first MRADE conference was held at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel in St. Louis, Missouri. The sixty-four participants from five states gathered to hear fifteen speakers present their ideas
at the conference. The speakers for our first annual conference included Sandra Zerger, Bethel
College; Rene Krajnak, Friends University; Jerome Krajnak, Wichita Public Schools; Carolyn
Emerson and Alan Joplin, University of Missouri-St. Louis; Larry DeBuhr, University of

MRADE membership numbered 55 in 1982 - 1983.
1983 - 1984
Forty-one persons attended the one-day MRADE conference which featured Wayne Giles. He

Another conference feature was a panel for newcomers to the developmental education profession. The panel, moderated by Sandra Zerger, consisted of Richard Lake, St. Louis Community College; Archie Davis, Illinois Central College; Anita McDonald, University of Missouri - St. Louis; and Deanna Martin, University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Anita McDonald served as president-elect of NARDSPE which officially changed its name to The National Association for Developmental Education (NADE) November 1, 1983, following a vote of the membership.
The first MRADE newsletter was published January 3, 1984.
MRADE membership was reported in April at 106.
Illinois decided to form a NADE affiliate.

conference co-sponsored with another professional organization. Ninety-one persons, from eight states, attended the jointly-sponsored conference with the Western College Reading and Learning Association and the Consortium for Learning and Study Skillsin Colleges. This conference featured 28 speakers in 20 sessions. The keynote speaker's message was that we need to share our successes to further developmental education nationally.
Mildred Steele, Director of the Skills Center of Central College, Pella, Iowa, was the first
recipient of NADE's professional development scholarship.
Wanda Long served as conference chairperson for the NADE conference held in St. Louis.
As of March, 1986, MRADE had 111 members.
1986 - 1987
In February, 1987, MRADE had 108 members.
The fifth annual MRADE conference, held at Penn Valley Community College, was attended by 65 developmental educators.

Reading Association. The conference featured roundtable discussions of topics of mutual
interest to professionals from both organizations.
Wanda Long served on the NADE Site Selection committee.

Kingston Trio sing some of their greats from the 1960's.
The MRADE newsletter has become increasingly more sophisticated in its presentation of
information of interest and importance to our membership. The newsletter editor position,
which had been an elected position, became an appointed position filled by David Arendale.
Ninety-two persons were members of MRADE as of February, 1990.
The MRADE Monograph Series was launched. Two monographs were published in Spring 1990 and two in Summer 1990. Monographs included: "Summer Entry Program for At-Risk Students" by Larry Kenney, "An Integrated Communication Course: A Link to Content Courses" by Larry Kenney, "Xscribe: Applications for the Hearing Impaired" by Mary Haydu, and "S.O.S. Student Opportunity System: A Systematic Plan for Student Retention" by Douglass Fitch and David Arendale.
1990 - 1991
Hunter Boylan served as keynote speaker and workshop presenter at the ninth annual MRADE
conference, held at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. In the evening, some of the
ninety-eight participants kicked off their shoes and made merry to the tunes of Jean Kittrell
and the Jazz Incredible.

applications in English Composition" by Mary Ragland and Rebecca Lannom.
1991 - 1992
After reaching Omaha in a blinding snowstorm, eager participants at the combined conference of MRADE and the College Reading and Learning Association heard a variety of speakers share ideas for addressing diversity in developmental education. Several ventured out in the evening to take the trolley to the Old Market for dinner.
Membership soared to 151 professionals from eight states - Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas,
Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, and Wisconsin.
Emelda Harris served on the NADE elections committee. David DeFrain served as chairperson of the NADE Administration SPIN. David Arendale served as chairperson of the Collaborative Learning NADE SPIN.
1992 - 1993
As of July 1, 1992, MRADE dues increased to $10.00.
Our active membership expanded to 250, which included members who paid dues in 1991-92 or 92-93.
The annual MRADE conference featured concurrent sessions as well as "nuggets," brief gems of wisdom from presenters, in a conference which helped all who participated to "mine their
minds." When their minds tired, the eighty-five attendees donned their school colors and logos
and let their feet do the walking through the Bonne Terre Mines, just a short distance from our
conference hosts at Mineral Area College, Flat River, Missouri. Another new feature of the
conference was the opportunity for members to display and/or sell professional materials they
had developed.
The document, "Midwest Regional Association for Developmental Education: Highlights of Our
First Decade," was compiled and distributed at the annual conference by MRADE historian, Karen Patty-Graham.
Although the 18th Annual NADE Conference is in March 1994, conference co-chairpersons, David Arendale and David DeFrain, and conference program chairperson, Karen Patty-Graham, conferred with each other frequently and met with 1993 conference planning committee members to prepare for MRADE's hosting of the NADE conference.
Three changes were made in the Constitution and By-Laws: (1) added an awards committee to the other standing committees to coordinate Outstanding Program, Outstanding Alumnus, and Outstanding Educator Awards; (2) added MRADE Historian as ex-officio non-voting member of the MRADE Executive Board; and (3) added MRADE Political Liaisons as ex-officio non-voting members of the MRADE Executive Board.
David DeFrain continued to serve as chairperson of the NADE Administration SPIN, and David Arendale continued to serve as chairperson of the NADE Collaborative Learning SPIN.
1993 - 1994
Planning for the 18th Annual NADE conference, to be held in Kansas City, Missouri, and hosted by MRADE, flowed along with such activities as program planning committee members from the Kansas City area flying in the Central Missouri State University chartered airline to the St. Louis area for an August meeting. They were able to get a bird's-eye view of the Flood of '93.
The 12th annual MRADE conference was hosted by the University of Missouri-Kansas City folks, headed by David Arendale. This conference served as a dry-run for NADE to arrive in Kansas City in March. The 141 participants from five states thoroughly enjoyed the 27 concurrent sessions and the caravan tour to the Hyatt Regency Hotel, site of the upcoming NADE conference. David produced "Conference Proceedings" which served as a publication of concurrent sessions.
MRADE served as host chapter for a wonderfully inspiring 18th Annual Conference of the National Association for Developmental Education at the Kansas City Hyatt Regency Hotel, March 2-6, 1994.The conference, "Developmental Education: Fountains of Opportunity," offered several unique features: "Back-by-Popular-Demand" sessions, roundtable discussions, veteran/novice sessions, daily conference newsletter, presenter gifts, CEO breakfast, grand opening of the exhibits, end-of-the-evening opening reception with formal entertainment, redesigned program booklet, computer sessions, tours of the conference area, expanded side tours, preconference e-mail newsletter, subsidized meal functions, duplication of concurrent session handouts, session abstracts available, door prizes, expanded call to conference brochure, expanded number of concurrent sessions, SPIN sessions highlighted, coordination of concurrent sessions, insertion of exhibitor handouts in registration bag, major sponsorship fees increased, credit card option for payment, promotion of pre and post conference institutes. A record number of 1275 paid participants attended this most successful conference!
Many thanks go to the MRADE members who turned out in large numbers to assist with the
conference and to the staff from University of Missouri-Kansas City, Central Missouri State
University, and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, who supported our conference
planners, David Arendale, David DeFrain, and Karen Patty-Graham all the way! Also, a record
number (68) of MRADE members attended our chapter meeting at the conference.
David Arendale served as chairperson of the Collaborative Learning SPIN for NADE. Becky Lannom served on the NADE political liaison committee and served as the newsletter editor.
1994 - 1995
Our active membership, as reported at our annual conference, was 260 with membership drawn from 89 different institutions in nine states.
Our 13th annual MRADE conference, October 20-21, 1994, held at William Jewell College in
Liberty, Missouri, gave participants an opportunity to focus on creativity in the
teaching/learning process through a series of concurrent sessions as well as through an
invitational learning workshop presented by featured speaker, John Piper. In addition, Dick
Brown, local entertainer and orator, inspired creativity in our thinking about students and
ourselves as educators. The "quilt" theme helped us see how we all add our complementary ideas to our work with students. We enjoyed beautiful fall weather; though the original cruise
"sank," the resurrected cruise and dinner allowed us to enjoy the sunset and the Kansas City
skyline in the distance.
MRADE Professional awards were presented at the conference to Outstanding Educator, Eleanor Syler; Outstanding Developmental Education Program, Student Academic Support Service Center at Independence Community College, Independence, Kansas; and Honorable Mention for Outstanding Developmental Education Program, College Overview Preparatory Experience Program at Southeastern Community College in West Burlington, Iowa.
