  • from Karen Patty-Graham (March 21, 2005):

The Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) is a consortium of 37 professional associations that are committed to promoting quality programs and services that enhance student learning and development in higher education.  NADE has been a member association since 1992, and Karen Patty-Graham is NADEs current representative to CAS.

CAS produces standards and guidelines for self-assessment and self-regulation of higher education programs in 30 functional areas.  These standards and guidelines help professionals define student learning and development outcomes, as well as conduct program self-assessment, using a set of self-assessment guides for each of the 30 functional areas.  One of the functional areas is Learning Assistance Programs, the set of standards and guidelines NADE representatives helped develop and used as a basis for creating the NADE Self-Evaluation Guides.

The Learning Assistance Programs standards and guidelines will be revised soon, so it is important for each of us to review those standards and guidelines so we may have a direct impact on any revisions as we shape the future of such programs.  To learn more about CAS and its work, explore the CAS web site at www.cas.edu or follow the links from NADEs web site at www.nade.net.  If you have questions about CAS or would like to offer comments on revision of current standards or suggestions for additional sets of standards, contact Karen Patty-Graham at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Instructional Services, P.O. Box 1630, Edwardsville, IL 62026; 618-650-3717; kpattyg@siue.edu.

  • from Shirley VanHook (March 28, 2005):

The Missouri Developmental Education Consortium (MoDEC) is a grassroots effort to bring developmental educators in Missouri together to discuss concerns facing developmental education in Missouri.  Paula Glover, Director of Institutional Effectiveness and Planning at Moberly Area Community College, received a grant from the Council of North Central Two Year Colleges and The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association to form The Missouri Developmental Education Consortium (MoDEC).  Membership in the Consortium includes developmental education faculty, institutional researchers, and administrators as well as other professionals with an interest in developmental education.

The objective and activities outlined in the grant include the following:

  • The consortium will provide a statewide forum for the study of issues in developmental education
  • Serve as a liaison between the Department of Higher Education and two-year colleges
  • Collaborate with other entities with an interest in Developmental education.
  • Compile and review placement policies and assessment instruments used in Missouri two-year colleges as well as study success rates such as graduation rates, persistence, and performance in subsequent courses of students in developmental education.

These goals were modified to include four year colleges and the Ozark Rural Systemic Initiative that have indicated an interest in the consortium.

The first meeting was held in December 2004 and three goals were identified.  In order of importance and subcommittees formed.  These subcommittees and their goals are:

  • Developmental Reading Issues Compiling information from two and four year schools including testing, curriculum, required reading level for college classes, faculty requirements to teach reading, research and tracking methods, etc.
  • Statewide developmental education database/sharing research Exploring a statewide study concerning students in developmental math in Missouri community colleges Informing high schools about developmental education and students in Developmental Education courses.
  • High School Information provide and/or improve avenues of communication between secondary and postsecondary institutions.

MoDEC has met three times with the final meeting for 2004-2005 to be held the end of April and a final report due the end of May.  It has been suggested that MoDEC be continued and organized similar to the Missouri Assessment Consortium that meets one or two times each semester.  Different institutions volunteer to host or facilitate meetings.  Host institutions are responsible for setting the meeting date, time, and location, as well as finalizing the agenda.

Plans are being made to share this information with various professional organizations, including presentations at the October 2005 MRADE conference and the February 2006 NADE conference.
