Fall 2007 Newsletter

MRADEMessage from the President

Much has happened with MRADE since the last newsletter. Our association, along with our colleagues from Iowa’s Developmental Education Association (IDEA)  planned , facilitated, and enjoyed our fall 2006 conference in Columbia, MO; CSI: College Success Inventory of Students, Programs, and Profession.  The conference included NADE Certification Training with Lisa Cole and Karen Patty-Graham and keynote speaker David Arendayle. Award presented at the conference include:

Karen Patty-Graham received the Henry Young Award for Outstanding Individual Contribution to NADE and was inducted as an ACDEA Fellow at NADE 2006

Wendi Raulie of CMSU received the NADE Martha Maxwell Student Scholarship at NADE 2006

Please start thinking about ways to involve members in the nether regions of our service region including our friends from Nebraska.  MRADE would also like to Improve collaboration with local CRLA, with the possibility of a joint conference.

MRADE celebrates an outstanding website. A special thank-you to our friends at East Central College for this. We also celebrate improved communication utilizing the MRADE list serve. Finally, let’s not forget those who are worked diligently on the NADE 2007 Reception. Thanks for all the hard work put into that project. The attendees had a great time.

Several Members of MRADE have been participating in Missouri Developmental Education Consortium (MoDEC).  MoDEC is a grassroots effort formed to assist in developing a framework for consistent approaches to developmental education in Missouri two-year colleges. Initiated in fall 2004, MoDEC has brought together developmental education professionals, including faculty, department chairs, institutional researchers, and administrators, from across the state’s thirteen public two-year colleges and the Missouri Department of Higher Education.

MoDEC provides a statewide forum for the study and discussion of issues in developmental education and serves as a liaison between Missouri two-year colleges and the Missouri Department of Higher Education in issues related to developmental education. Additionally, MoDEC collaborates with other professional organizations such as MRADE to further improve practices and policies in developmental education.

MRADE extends congratulations to the Missouri Developmental Education Consortium (MoDEC). This group recently earned the MCCA Award of Distinction for its significant contributions of time and resources that further the role and mission of the community college movement.  Many of the key leaders of MoDEC are MRADE members.

As previously stated, we now have a MRADE list serve for our members.  The list is hosted at East Central College, and provides a communication loop for our members.  Please use this link to pass on information to the MRADE membership.  The list can be accessed by sending an email to mrade@eastcentral.edu .  If you would like to join the MRADE list please email me at phillips@eastcentral.edu .

The MRADE website at www.mrade.net is in the process of being updated.  Those who would like to volunteer to help keep content updated, please let me know.  I will be sending out request for content from time to time.  Feel free to let me know any ideas you would like incorporated into our site.

Please mark your calendar for September 26-28, 2007 for the upcoming joint conference at the Stoney Creek Inn in historical St Joseph, Missouri.

Good luck this semester and I hope to see you at the conference!

Sincerely,

Melody Shipley
