On Thursday, September 29, the East Central College Board of Trustees named Dr. Jon Bauer to serve as the institution’s next president.  His term will begin July 1, 2012, when current president Ed Jackson retires.  Bauer will become ECC’s sixth president.

Bauer is currently ECC’s vice president of finance and administration, a position he has held since 2005.

Jim Perry, president of the ECC board, stated that board members felt strongly that Bauer was the best person for the job.  “Dr. Bauer has held a variety of positions in the 16 years he has been employed with the college,” noted Perry. “With his strong background in finance, knowledge of the institution, legislative experience and involvement in this community, he will be an excellent president.”

Perry said that board members chose not to go through the time and expense involved with a national presidential search process since Bauer is uniquely qualified to serve as ECC’s president.  “We didn’t feel we could find a better person to lead this college,” Perry stated.  “I’ve worked with many college administrators through the years and Dr. Bauer doesn’t take a back seat to any of them.”

The unanimous decision to promote Bauer to the top spot at ECC came following an executive session held today.  A contract will be negotiated in the coming weeks.

Bauer, 47, stated that he is honored and humbled to be selected as ECC’s next president.  “I appreciate the confidence that the board has shown and plan to do everything possible to demonstrate that their selection was the best decision for this college,” he said.  “I look forward to working with the faculty and staff in this new role.”

“I am grateful for the support that Dr. Jackson has shown during his tenure here,” Bauer noted.  “I’ve learned a lot from him.  He and the other presidents I’ve worked for at ECC have all been great mentors.”

Bauer is a product of the community college system, graduating in 1984 from Jefferson College in Hillsboro, Missouri.  He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.  Bauer received his MBA from Fontbonne University and later earned his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

In 1995 Bauer started at the college as director of public relations. He assumed additional responsibilities in 1999 as the director of college relations.  In 2001 he was promoted to dean of enrollment management.  He spent one year as dean of ECC’s satellite location in Rolla prior to his appointment as chief fiscal officer in 2005.

Before joining the ECC staff, Bauer was assistant news director and news director at KLPW Radio.  He then went on to serve as editor of the Union Missourian from 1989-1995.

His community involvement includes serving as an officer with the Washington Area Chamber of Commerce and trustee on the Washington Public Library Board.  He is a member of the Mercy Hospital-Washington advisory board, the 353 Redevelopment committee, the Washington Civic Industrial Corporation and the Union Rotary Club.

He is a past member of the Franklin County Area United Way board of directors, the Franklin County Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy committee and the Union Highway 50 committee.

Don Shook served as the first president of East Central College.  Shook was succeeded by Charles Novak, Dale Gibson, Karen Herzog and Jackson.

East Central College was founded in 1968.  In addition to the main campus in Union, the college also offers classes in Rolla, Sullivan, Warrenton and Washington.  This semester 4,127 students are enrolled in credit classes.

The college has 212 full-time employees and another 211 part-time faculty and staff members.

Bauer and his wife, Barbara, reside in Washington with their three children:  Mike, a freshman at ECC; Matthew, a freshman at Washington High School, and Molly, a first grader in the Washington School District.
