The East Central College Softball Falcons captured the Region 16 championship over the weekend with a 1-0 victory over the St. Louis Community College Archers.  This weekend they will face Murray State in district action at ECC.

The Falcons dropped the first championship game on Saturday, losing 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning.  The double elimination tournament allowed East Central to face St. Louis again in the final game.

A defensive battle was overcome in the top of the sixth inning as the Falcons registered three consecutive hits to load the bases and a walk to score the winning run.  With the pitching of Brooke Brenton and a strong defensive effort, the Falcons were able to blank the Archers and preserve the win for East Central.

This marks the fourth NJCAA Region 16 title for East Central sofball with other wins coming in 1977, 1994 and 2007.  Coach Brad Wallach was named Region 16 Coach of the Year.

ECC will host the district tournament this weekend, facing Murray State out of Oklahoma.  The district playoff format is a best two out of three series to see who will advance to the NJCAA National Tournament in Clinton, Mississippi.

Games are set for 2 and 4 p.m. on Friday, May 4.  If necessary, the deciding game would be played at noon Saturday, May 5.
