Athletes Win Conference Academic Award
Student athletes at East Central College ended the 2011-12 academic year with the best academic performance in college history.
An overall athletic department grade point average of 3.09 once again puts the Falcons at the top of the Midwest Community College Athletic Conference. This marks the third consecutive year that ECC has won MCCAC’s Harold Oetting Award for the highest student athlete GPA in the conference.
A record eight student athletes were honored with their highest academic achievement awards. Softball standout Brooke Brenton, the National Alliance of Two Year College Athletic Administrators Female Scholar Athlete of the Year, led the group with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Brenton also received the Pinnacle Award for Academic Excellence.
Falcon volleyball players Sarah Gilkerson Erica Mitchell, and Sarah Schwentker received the Superior Academic Achievement Award. Four other students were honored with the Exemplary Academic Achievement Award including soccer players Thomas “Cody” Beck and Mario “Brian” Monge and volleyball players Sarah Braun and Lauren Dudgeon.
Another 17 student athletes were named to the National Junior College Athletic Association Academic All-Region Team and 22 student athletes were named to the MCCAC Academic All-Conference Team.
The NJCAA honored the women’s volleyball and softball teams by naming them NJCAA All-Academic Teams with 3.4 and 3.1 team GPAs respectively.
