The East Central College Foundation has announced the establishment of another endowed scholarship to benefit ECC students.

The Douglas E. Reed Scholarship will be awarded for the first time this fall to a full-time ECC student majoring in pre-engineering, math or science.  Doug and Dr. Jane Reed of Washington set up the scholarship which can be applied to tuition, fees or books.  Preference will be given to high school students who complete upper level math and science classes and score well on the ACT math and science sections.  Financial need will not be a selection criterion and students eligible for Missouri’s A+ program will not be favored.

A graduate of ECC, Doug Reed took classes at the Union campus in the mid ‘70s.  “I had many fine teachers at ECC, in particular Leroy Alt was my instructor for several classes and prepared me well for the transition to UMR and Washington U,” said Reed.

“The track that Doug took in obtaining his education after graduating from Owensville High School illustrates what anyone at anytime under any circumstances can do if they work hard,” said Jane Reed, a long-time educator.   “ECC is an incredible value, allowing students to receive a quality education without taking on a large debt.”

The couple has been active members of the ECC Foundation for many years.  An employee of McDonnell Douglas/Boeing for over 30 years, Doug Reed has utilized Boeing’s matching gifts program to increase his contributions to the college.

Established in 1975, the ECC Foundation supports the growth and development of East Central College in whatever ways might be beneficial to students, staff and facilities.  The Foundation solicits and receives tax deductible gifts which are managed for the benefit of the college and its students. It is chartered as a non-profit 501 (c)3 organization for educational purposes. The ECC Foundation provided more than $160,000 in scholarships to more than 120 students in 2011-2012.
