East Central College’s summer musical, The Marvelous Wonderettes, is a step back in time.

John Anglin directs the funny, frothy musical revue which features many hit songs from the 50s and 60s.

“We’ll take our audience to the 1958 Springfield High School prom to  meet the Wonderettes, four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts,” noted Anglin.  “As we learn about their lives and loves, we’ll be treated to the girls performing such classics as Lollipop, Dream Lover, Sugartime, Lipstick on Your Collar, and Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me.”

Ten years later the four women gather again, this time for their high school reunion.  “The dynamic group performs once again and we get to see how their lives and friendships have changed and endured,” Anglin said.  “Hits from the 60s include Rescue Me, Respect, Son Of A Preacher Man, It’s In His Kiss, It’s My Party, and Wedding Bell Blues.”

The cast includes Leslea Walter as Betty Jean, Katie Alexander as Missy, Bethany Herron as Suzy and Sarah Hoppe as Cindy Lou.   Joining Anglin on the crew are Paula Nolley, music director; Larry Melton, set designer and Josh Turk, lighting and sound director. Kelly Sparrow is stage manager and costumes are coordinated by Elaine Hutson.

The Marvelous Wonderettes will be presented Thursday through Saturday, July 25 through 27, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, July 28,  at 2  p.m.    Tickets may be purchased online at www.ecctheatre.com , by calling  636-584-6693 or by stopping at the ECC Box Office located on the first floor of Buescher Hall weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

The musical comedy, with a book by Roger Bean, pays homage to the high school song leader squads of the 1950s.
