richard=knudsenEast Central College will host a memorial service for long-time faculty member Richard Knudsen on Friday afternoon, April 25.  Knudsen died Monday, April 14, following a brief illness.  He was 80.

Community members and former students are invited to join with ECC faculty and staff to honor his memory at a 4 p.m. service in the John Edson Anglin Performing Arts Center.  Knudsen was a strong supporter of the performing arts at the college.  The music department is planning a service that will include songs by some of his favorite composers.

“Richard was an integral part of the East Central College family,” stated Dr. Jon Bauer, ECC president.  “His expertise, dedication, and skill served students throughout his career. Because of his dedication to the college and our students, it is fitting that a memorial service be held on campus. I can think of no better way to pay tribute to Richard than to commemorate his contributions to the college through a memorial service and a scholarship fund in his name.”

Jean McCann, vice president of curriculum and instruction at ECC, noted that Knudsen brought an amazing spirit to the classroom.  “He was dedicated to his subject area and a strong advocate for his students,” said McCann.  “Over his many years at the college, students of all ages and majors had the opportunity to learn from Mr. Knudsen and they will never forget him.”

Knudsen began teaching philosophy and religion classes on a part-time basis at ECC in 1975.  In 1986 he became a full-time instructor.  He was an Episcopal minister for many years, serving congregations in St. Clair and Sullivan.

In 2010 he received the Senior Service Award from the Missouri Community College Association.

An endowed scholarship through the ECC Foundation has been established in Knudsen’s name.  Donations toward that scholarship will be accepted at the memorial service or by contacting the Foundation at 636-584-6506 or visiting the Foundation website.
