East Central College invites area residents age 55 and older to the annual Senior Expo & Health Fair Friday morning, May 9.

The free event will be held from 9 a.m. until noon in the gymnasium of the Multipurpose Building on the college campus in Union.

Presentations will be held every half hour starting at 9:30 a.m.  Topics will include creating a family health history, acupuncture to help alleviate arthritis, controlling health issues, estate planning and how to stay young.

A number of vendors will conduct screenings related to glaucoma, blood sugar, hearing and macular degeneration.  Other assessments will focus on balance testing, foot scans, spinal screening, blood pressure and hearing loss.  Attendees can also have their hearing aids cleaned  and hand function assessed.

The mammogram van from the Breast Healthcare Center of Missouri Baptist Medical Center will also be at ECC May 9.  Women should call 1-800-870-5731 now to schedule an appointment for that morning.

More than 30 entities are joining with the college to co-sponsor the event.  Americare and CrabApple Village Senior Estates are platinum level sponsors for 2014.  Bank of Washington Senior Advantage, Ming Senior Services and the Washington Lions Club are gold level sponsors.

An additional 27 vendors will be in attendance at the event.  Several of the vendors will offer prize drawings and there will be drawings for door prizes throughout the morning.

Cindy Brinker, coordinator of the Expo and Health Fair, noted that this is the ninth year the college has sponsored the free event.  “Our intent is the same as it was in 2006,” said Brinker.  “We want to promote health awareness through education and prevention, and provide information to seniors about services available in the area."

Brinker encourages anyone 55 and older to attend and bring family members who wish to hear about community resources available to their loved ones.  Golf carts will be available to shuttle attendees to the door so even those with difficulty walking will find it easy to get to the event.
