Jazz Improvisation
This course will cover selected topics dealing with basic improvisation in the jazz idiom. The class will focus on learning melodies, scales, and arpeggios that are essential to jazz improvisation as well as studying the solos of important jazz musicians. The emphasis will be placed on learning to play over a basic 12 bar blues and easy standard melodies from the jazz repertoire. Students are expected to bring their instruments to every class as we will spend the bulk of class time playing. This course DOES NOT meet the general education requirements and is considered an elective course for music majors.
Prerequisite: Students must have a basic knowledge of their instruments and be able to play several major scales.

The course will include work on percussion chamber repertoire as well as improvisatory pieces. Students will explore traditional, concert literature as well as world percussion ensemble playing. Vocal Diction
This course will discuss the basic rules of pronunciation and articulation for the Italian and German languages. Students will receive an introduction to the study of basic phonetic pronuciations and interpretation of the symbols used in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). These will be studied through both spoken and written exercises. Students will use practical application of their knowledge of diction by signing appropriate selections in each language periodically throughout the semester. Corequisite: Applied Voice

Ensemble repertoire will be drawn from the major periods of classical music, and perhaps some jazz as well. The goal of this course is to prepare, collectively, 45 min. to an hour of music for at least two performances during the semester. Performance dates and locations will be announced at the beginning of the semester, or as soon as possible.
Prerequisite: One semester of Applied Guitar is recommended. Student must have basic sight-reading skills and technique.
