More Important Information

International Student Admission - East Central College is approved by the United States Department of Justice (Permit STL-214F-220, 3 April, 1973) as an institution of higher learning for non-immigrant international students. Residents of other countries entering college for the first time must apply for admission directly from their homeland. A student from another country is admitted by transfer from another college or university in the United States only if he or she has attained a grade point average of 2.0 or higher and is entitled to an honorable dismissal.

International students desiring admission to East Central College should submit the following documents and information in addition to the general College admission requirements.

  1. Complete an East Central College Application for Admission.

  2. Submit an original copy of an Affidavit of Support (INS form I-34) indicating minimum support in the amount of $14,000.00 per year. The current total estimated cost of $14,000.00 annually is subject to change.

  3. Submit an East Central College Sponsorship of International Student form. NOTE: The sponsor must be a resident of the East Central College service district and be responsible for assisting with the international student's housing and transportation needs (although not necessarily responsible for financial support).

  4. Submit one of the following as evidence of English competency:
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (minimum TOEFL score of 550 or 213 on the computer based test.)
    • American Consular Office Test of English Proficiency (administered through the U.S. Department of State).
    • A satisfactory grade from a recognized non-remedial course in English as a Foreign Language from an American college or university.

  5. Submit proof of insurance. Before issuance of an I-20, all applicants must show evidence of health insurance covering a 12-month period. Insurance must be in force during the entire period that the student is enrolled at East Central College.

  6. Submit original transcripts of all secondary schools and universities previously attended translated into English and accompanied by the grading system used. Transcripts must be sent directly from school/college records/registrar's offices to the address below. These records cannot be received directly from students or sponsors.

If international student admission is approved, an I-20 form will be issued within 30 days of receipt of the above records. All documents must be received by the following dates:

April 15 for Summer Semester
July 15 for Fall Semester
November 15 for Spring Semester

Policies and Procedures - Students and student organizations are required to observe the policies of the college district and the laws of the city, state and federal government, and conduct their affairs in such a manner compatible with the educational objectives of the College. These policies are explained in detail in the College Catalog.

Student's Rights to Privacy - General Statement - The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 as amended, ("The Act"), pertaining to the protection of rights and privacy of students, governs access to and release of student records. The law provides that, as a condition of receiving certain federal funds:

1)      Educational institutions shall provide students access to certain official records directly relating to the student requesting access and an opportunity to challenge such records on the grounds that they are inaccurate, misleading, or otherwise inappropriate;

2)      Educational institutions obtain written consent of students before releasing certain personally identifiable data about students from records to other than a specified list of exceptions;

3)      Students be informed of their rights specified by this statute, and

4)      The Department of Education investigate alleged violations of the Act.

This information is furnished to notify students of the rights granted by the Act and to set up guidelines for the protection of their right of privacy.

Records Maintained - Certain official educational records personally identifiable for each student and former student maintained by the college are available for inspection by the student. Following is a list of records and their locations:

·          Academic & Admissions: Registrar's Office

·          Advisement: Academic Advisor's Office

·          Disciplinary: Dean of Student Development Office

·          Financial Aid: Director of Financial Aid Office

·          Financial Records: Executive Dean, Finance & Administration

·          Placement: Coordinator, Career Services Office

·          Progress Reports: Faculty Offices

A student may forego the right to inspect records maintained by the college, but the institution may not require such a waiver as a condition of admission to the college.

Students have the right to obtain copies of file information, including transcripts. If a copy of this record is desired a transcript request must be prepared and submitted with the appropriate fee. The transcript will be prepared and mailed. Transcripts from high schools and other post-secondary institutions of higher learning must be obtained from the institution previously attended.
