A beginning course in music theory.  Notation, rhythms, triads, triad function, embellishing tones, inversions, melodic phrases, and species counterpoint are studied. 

MUC 103 Music Theory II (Aural)

A second course in sight singing and aural recognition; further use of diatonic melodies, simple and compound meters, further use of harmonic progressions are studied. Includes two hours aural theory per week.

MUC 111 Class Piano I: Beginners

Small group instruction for student with little to no previous piano teaching. An introduction to keyboard fundamentals through the study of note reading, rhythm symbols, technique and playing early elementary level repertoire.

MUC 112 Class Piano II: Upper Elementary
Prerequisite: MUC 111 

Small group instruction for students who have completed Class Piano I, or have limited prior piano training. Students may already read and play in both clefs. Studies; Easy classical repertoires; one octave major and minor scales, arpeggios, and chord progressions; simple harmonization, transportation, and sight-reading techniques.

MUC 113 Class Piano III: Early Intermediate
Prerequisite: MUC 112 

Small group instruction at an early intermediate level for students who have successfully completed Class Piano II or who have had several semesters of previous training. Studies; Intermediate classical repertoire; major and minor scales, arpeggios, chord progression, transposition, sight-reading, and harmonization techniques.

MUC 141 Vocal Diction (English & French)

The purpose of the course is to survey the fundamentals of English and French diction through study and implementation of the standard International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), the
correct pronunciation of English and French consonants and vowels, and the diction rules of the two languages.

MUC 142 Vocal Diction (Italian & German)

MUC 201 Music Theory III (Aural)
Prerequisite: MUC 104 & MUC 103 

A third course in music theory. A study of chromatic harmony including borrowed and altered chords, mode mixture, and additional forms. Two hours aural theory per week.

MUC 202 Music Theory III (Written)
Prerequisite: MUC 104 & MUC 103 

A third course in a sequence of music theory courses. In this course, students will learn chromatic harmony, contrapuntal genres, and classical forms. This course emphasizes the writing, hearing, and analysis of music. Two hours of aural theory per week.

MUC 203 Music Theory IV (Aural)
Prerequisite: MUC 201 MUC 202 

A fourth semester course in music aural training and sight singing. This course will include a study of rhythmic dictation as well as melodic and harmonic dictation and sight singing in supertonic and leading tone sevenths, non-dominant seventh chords, decorative chromaticism, secondary dominants and modulation to closely related keys.

MUC 204 Music Theory IV (Written)

A fourth semester of study in music theory in more complex chords and analytical techniques for major trends in 19th and 20th century composition.

MUC 211 Class Piano IV: Intermediate
Prerequisite: MUC 113 

Small group instruction for students who have successfully completed Class Piano III or are already playing intermediate classical repertoire. Studies; Advanced classical repertoire; all major and minor scales, arpeggios, chord progressions, advanced sight-reading, transposition, and harmonization techniques.

MUC 212 Class Piano Advanced Skills
Prerequisite: Instructor approval.

Class Piano sequence of small group instruction in piano, is limited to 12 students per class. The courses range from beginning through late intermediate levels and are designed to develop skills and techniques applicable to all keyboard styles. Class Piano V is designed for students at the late intermediate level of technical skill. Students will be assigned individual pieces from the various eras of classical repertoire (Baroque through 20th Century). All students will work on technical and functional materials in a progressive, orderly manner. Materials will emphasize musicianship skills in correlation to keyboard proficiency examinations for continuing musical studies. Repeatable.

MUC 222 Basic Conducting
Prerequisite: MUC 102, MUC 101, MUC 104, and MUC 103; minimum grade C

Basic Conducting is an introduction to conducting skills with an emphasis on the art and study of conducting, baton technique, left-hand technique, non-verbal communication, leadership, conducting terminology, transpositions, and score reading.

The purpose of the ECC Choral Association is to prepare the large choral work for performance along with the ECC College Choir and an area symphony during the Spring Semester of each academic year. The goal of this course is to prepare, collectively, 45 min. to an hour of music for at least two performances during the semester. Performance dates and locations will be announced at the beginning of the semester, or as soon as possible.

MUE 241 Guitar Ensemble IV
Prerequisite: MUE 143. One semester of Applied Guitar is recommended. Student must have basic sight-reading skills and technique.

Music will be provided at the beginning of the semester, and will be assigned to students at the appropriate level of development. Students will be divided into groups, including quartets, trios, duets, and even solos...depending on enrollment. Ensemble repertoire will be drawn from the major periods of classical music, and perhaps some jazz as well. The goal of this course is to prepare, collectively, 45 min. to an hour of music for at least two performances during the semester. Performance dates and locations will be announced at the beginning of the semester, or as soon as possible.

Percussion Ensemble is designed to acquaint percussion majors with various aspects of collaborative percussion work. The course will include work on percussion chamber repertoire as well as improvisatory pieces. Students will explore traditional, concert literature as well as world percussion ensemble playing. Semester performances will include some of the following: playing for classes, student recitals, juries and concerts.

MUS 100 Fundamentals of Music

An introductory course, Fundamentals of Music, teaches the student basic sets of musical skills and elements necessary for all music. This includes areas of study in music theory, intervals, triads in music, sight-singing, aural recognition of diatonic intervals, melodic phrases, and rhythms.

The course is designed as a historical survey of the development of Rock and Roll style music over the past 75 years. The purpose of this course is to broaden the style of music being studied at our college and to give the students a more concentrated look at the style of music that has shaped the last several generations.

The course is designed as a historical survey of the development of Jazz style music over the past 125 years. The purpose of this course is to broaden the style of music being studied at our college and to give the students a more concentrated look at the style of music that had shaped our culture.

MUS 171 Music History From 1800

A survey of the history of western music of the Romantic era through the twentieth century.

MUS 172 Music History to 1800

A study of art music, its styles and forms with emphasis on representative works from the standard repertoire including the Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and Classic eras.

MUS 228 Principles of Music Education
Prerequisite: ENG 101; Minimum grade C. 

An introductory course for prospective music educators that focuses on a minimum 20 hours field experience, lesson and assessment planning, the role of music in the schools, and ethical and legal issues for educators. Students will study current teaching practices of general music, band, orchestra and choirs and develop a personal philosophy of music education.
