Join us for a screening of the film Citizen Ruth and a guest lecture and discussion with Dr. Jill Delston.

Dr. Jill Delston is an Associate Teaching Professor in Philosophy at UMSL and author of the book Medical Sexism: Contraception Access, Reproductive Medicine, and Health Care (available in the ECC Library!).

Citizen Ruth is the story of Ruth Stoops (Laura Dern), a woman who nobody even noticed — until she got pregnant. Now, everyone wants a piece of her. The film is a comedy about one woman caught in the ultimate tug-of-war: a clash of wild, noisy, ridiculous people that rapidly dissolves into a media circus. The 1996 film–directed by Alexander Payne–also stars Kurtwood Smith, Swoosie Kurtz, Burt Reynolds, Kelly Preston, and Tippi Hedron.

The Film and Lecture Series brings acclaimed documentaries and narrative films, scholars, authors, journalists, and poets to campus throughout the year. The series is designed to enhance essential components of education by providing audiences with avenues for exercising critical thought, appreciating various forms of artistic expression, and deepening cultural understanding.
