JumpStart College Prep

Start Strong… Finish Faster

What is a JumpStart Course?

Maybe you haven’t taken Science or Math for a while, or maybe English was never your strongest subject. These factors can make college less enjoyable and affect students’ grades.

That’s why the Learning Center offers free JumpStart Workshops to help students to put their best foot forward this Fall. In a JumpStart course, you will

  • review foundational knowledge,
  • learn to navigate ECC’s online learning system,
  • prepare for college-level courses, and
  • gain confidence.

What Will I Learn?

JumpStart English is designed for students who have Accuplacer scores from 250-255, ACT scores of 18/19, or previous challenges in high school English or English Comp. I. This course is also ideal for students who lack confidence in writing. In this course, students will review and practice foundational concepts of academic writing.

JumpStart Math is designed for students who are taking MTH 110, 140, 150 or above, but would benefit from a review of concepts and study skills. They may have just barely placed into their math course or have previously repeated a math course. This course is also an excellent choice for students who lack confidence when it comes to math courses.

JumpStart Life Science is a new Learning Center Program designed for students to review key concepts in Biology and Chemistry in preparation for introductory college-level courses. JumpStart Life Science will provide an overview of foundational course content that is typically reviewed in the first few weeks of each life science course. Students who are planning to take an introductory life science course who feel a little shaky on fundamentals or have not been in a science course for a while would benefit from this program. This course would also be an excellent choice for students who plan to enter competitive programs such as nursing because they will be able to preview key concepts and maximize their chances of early success.

What if my summer schedule is packed?

These courses are offered from June to August in an online format together with arranged visits with Learning Center Specialists.

We know our students have busy summer schedules. JumpStart courses are arranged to fit your needs, including changing work hours and vacations.

Visits can be scheduled any time during business hours, and are available in-person or online. Typically, students meet with Learning Center Staff once a week but can meet more frequently, as needed.
