TRIO Programs
The TRIO programs are Federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRIO includes eight programs targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to postbaccalaureate programs. TRIO also includes a training program for directors and staff of TRIO projects.

Program Benefits
Academic Support
TRIO provides structured, individualized academic assistance to help students build confidence and master coursework. Services include:
- One‑on‑one academic tutoring in math, english, science, and specialized subject areas.
- Study‑skills workshops on topics like time management, note‑taking, organization, and test preparation.
- An Individual Academic & Career Plan (IACP) created collaboratively with each student.
- Mid‑term progress checks, early alerts, and proactive intervention when concerns appear.
- Learning communities and connections with ECC’s Learning Center for ongoing tutoring
Financial Guidance & Assistance
Many students enter college without clear knowledge of how financial aid works. TRIO helps participants make informed decisions through:
- Access to TRIO supplemental grant aid for qualifying participants.
- Financial literacy education (budgeting, credit, financial planning, housing stability).
- FAFSA completion assistance and personalized guidance from TRIO and Financial Aid staff.
- Help understanding Pell eligibility, loan implications, and strategies to reduce borrowing.
- Scholarship search support and workshops.
Personalized Advising & Mentoring
TRIO uses a holistic, proactive advising model—a nationally recognized best practice that improves persistence and retention. Students receive:
- Individualized academic and personal advising at least three times each semester.
- Proactive outreach whenever concerns arise (attendance, grades, life stressors).
- Peer mentoring for first‑year students and for those on academic recovery plans.
- Professional mentoring from trained ECC staff and community members.
- Support navigating barriers such as transportation, childcare, mental health, or housing needs.
Career & Transfer Preparation
TRIO students benefit from structured career exploration and guidance toward transferring to a four‑year college. Services include:
- Career assessments using validated tools and guided interpretation by trained advisors.
- Assistance with resume development, interview prep, and job search skills.
- Transfer advising that includes selecting majors, building academic pathways, and reviewing admissions requirements.
- College visits to four‑year institutions to help students make informed transfer decisions.
- Assistance understanding transfer scholarships and financial planning for a bachelor’s degree.
TRIO Events & Trips
Academic and cultural enrichment is a required and highly valued part of TRIO SSS Students can participate in:
- College tours throughout Missouri and neighboring states.
- Cultural events, such as museum visits, performances, civic experiences, and leadership activities.
- Educational workshops on financial literacy, study skills, wellness, and career development.
- Summer Bridge Symposium to help new students transition successfully to college.
- Celebration events, including academic awards and TRIO Graduation Ceremonies.

Who Is Eligible?
Students must meet at least one of the following:
- First‑generation college student
- Income‑eligible based on federal guidelines
- Registered with ECC’s Access Services for a documented disability
Participants must also be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and demonstrate academic need.
