MDA 101 Administrative Procedures
Prerequisite: None

This course is designed to prepare the student in records management, financial processes, insurance and coding, scheduling, office procedures, communication, and management of the electronic health record. Students will achieve 100 percent of course designated MAERB core competencies for this course.

Students must maintain a grade of C or higher to successfully pass this course.

MDA 112 Office Interpersonal & Communication Skills

This course is designed to introduce the concepts of interpersonal therapeutic communication in a variety of settings within a diverse population. Emphasis is placed on the study of behavior, basic psychological principles, developmental stages of the life cycle, and principles of therapeutic, verbal and non-verbal communication skills as they relate to the role of the medical assistant. Students will achieve 100 percent of course designated MAERB core competent ices for this course. Students must maintain a grade of C or higher to successfully pass this course.

MDA 113 Clinical Procedures

This course is designed to introduce students to patient-centered care and procedures involving concepts of infection control, patient screenings and assessments, general / physical / specialty examinations, procedures and minor surgeries, emergencies, pathophysiology, medication administration, patient education, and community resources. Students will achieve 100% of the designated course MAERB Core Competencies by demonstrating and implementing hands-on techniques. Students must maintain a grade of B or higher to successfully pass this course.

MDA 121 Medical Ethics for Healthcare Professionals

This course is designed to introduce and provide the student with a broad understanding of legal and ethical issues facing the healthcare industry. Current issues and trends related to ethical and legal healthcare practice and decision-making will be discussed and debated, as well as, state and federal healthcare regulations. Students will achieve 100 percent of course designated MAERB core competent ices for this course. Students must maintain a grade of C or higher to successfully pass this course.

MDA 213 Medical Laboratory Procedures
Prerequisite: MDA 113 Minimum grade B; MDA 101 and EMS 101 Minimum grade C;

This course is designed to introduce various procedures used in medical laboratory settings in compliance with OSHA standards and CLIA-waived testing. Students will have the opportunity to learn and demonstrate the application of basic techniques and instruments used in all areas of medical specialties including phlebotomy, urology, hematology, chemistry, serology and quality control. Biohazards, specimen collection and patient educations will be included. Students will achieve 100% of the MAERB Core Competencies by demonstrating and implementing hands-on techniques. Students must maintain a B or higher to successfully pass this course.

MDA 222 Program Capstone-Medical Assistant Review
Prerequisite: The course should be taken the last or next to the last semester prior to graduation.

This course is designed to prepare the student to transition to practice as a professional medical assistant. Application of previously learned coursework will be identified and discussed in relation to the profession, as well as developing a plan for professional employment. Additionally, students will review components of the CMA exam and prepare to sit for the CMA, AAMA national certification exam. Students will achieve 100 percent of course designated MAERB core competent ices for this course. Students must maintain a grade of C or higher to successfully pass this course.

MDA 223 Medical Assistant Clinical Externship
Prerequisite: Must pass program externship application requirements and have consent of program instructor.

This course is designed to provide students the ability to apply concepts, practical experience, knowledge and skills learned throughout the Medical Assisting curriculum in the clinical setting. The student will complete 200 hours in an ambulatory care outpatient setting under the direct supervises of a clinical professional. Upon completion of the externship, students will have met 100% of the MAERB Core Curriculum Master Competencies. Students must achieve Passing (P) to successfully pass this course.
