(Rescheduled) Martin Luther King Jr Day Celebration – February 26

The annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration is hosted by Neighbors United – Undoing Racism along with the Social Justice Committee at East Central College.

Fellowship and dinner will follow program

  •  Donald Shook Student Center – DSSC – Gymnasium

All are invited to the celebration, which will feature guest speaker Zaki Baruti. A retired educator from East St. Louis, Baruti currently serves as the president/general of the Universal African Peoples Organization and editor of the African Newsworld.

Musical and praise dancing performances will also be featured, and the Church Women United will present their annual Human Rights Award.

A meal will follow (a freewill donation of $8 is suggested, but not required).

The event will also feature a continuing fundraiser to donate diverse children’s books to area libraries called “Stories Matter” where people can see the books being donated and adopt specific books for local libraries.

Neighbors United – Undoing Racism has been an active group in the Franklin County area, well-known for their Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations that bring together church and social groups to celebrate and work toward King’s legacy of equality and community. Church groups and individuals from across the area have come together to strive to expand their reach into building relationships in the community. The Social Justice Committee at East Central College, co-hosts of this year’s event, seeks to further civic action on and off campus.
