Financial Aid Application Deadline Approaching

June 19, 2017 | Campus News

The priority deadline for students to submit their Financial Aid Application (FAFSA) and requested documentation to East Central College is around the corner! Students need to fill out the proper paperwork on or before July 1.

“If all of their paperwork is turned in, ECC can guarantee that it is processed by our fee deadline so that their financial aid will be used to hold their classes,” said Director of Student Financial Aid Karen Griffin. “If a student turns in their paperwork after the priority deadline, we cannot make that assurance.”

Griffin recommends students who don’t file the FAFSA or other relevant documents by July 1 to sign up for a payment plan to secure their classes. Payment plans can be accessed by logging into eCentral.

Students should allow up to 4 weeks for the processing of financial aid applications.

Financial assistance is provided through many forms – grants, scholarships, loans, etc. Through a process of careful planning and preparation, higher education can be an obtainable goal. Each student must take the responsibility to review his or her goals, evaluate their family’s financial situation, and determine a course of action.

Students do not have to do this entire process alone. The Office of Financial Aid is there to help! Call 636-584-6588, email finaid@eastcentral.edu or visit https://www.eastcentral.edu/finaid for more information.

Trustees Extend Contract for President Dr. Jon Bauer

June 15, 2017 | Campus News

The East Central College Board of Trustees voted unanimously to award a contract extension to President Dr. Jon Bauer at the June 14, 2017 meeting. Approved following an executive session, the extension will run through June 30, 2020 with any change in salary commensurate with raises provided to all employees in fiscal years 2019 and 2020.

Bauer recently completed his fifth year as ECC president.

Board of Trustees President Ann Hartley commented that Dr. Bauer has provided outstanding leadership in his tenure at the college. “Dr. Bauer has a passion for East Central College and the community it serves,” said Hartley. “He brings integrity, dignity and accountability to the position, and the Board of Trustees believes he will continue moving the college in a positive direction.”

“Serving as president is an honor and a privilege,” said Dr. Bauer. “I am humbled by the extension, and I look forward to serving the college as we go through our accreditation process and celebrate our golden anniversary in the next few years.”

Bauer is the college’s sixth president, succeeding Donald Shook, Charles Novak, Dale Gibson, Karen Herzog and Ed Jackson.  On two occasions Fred Davis served as interim president of the college.

FY 18 Budget Approved at East Central College Board Meeting

June 15, 2017 | Campus News

The general operating budget and staffing plan for the 2018 fiscal year was approved by the East Central College Board of Trustees on Tuesday, June 14.

Part of the $18.6 million budget and staffing plan included a projected decline in state funding as well as a likely increase in local tax revenue. The staffing plan included the reorganization of leadership in the Academics division. The new leadership positions will be filled by current faculty members that results in a cost savings to the college due to faculty retirements and the restructuring of the Academic Division.

“We will now have a Dean of Instruction, a Dean of Career and Technical and a Dean of Health Sciences,” said East Central College President Dr. Jon Bauer. “These positions will further strengthen the services we provide to our students.”

Two new director positions were also approved and will better position East Central College for outreach in the community.

“The Director of Dual Credit and College Readiness will work with area high schools to promote collaboration,” said Dr. Bauer. “We want ensure we are making a concentrated effort to work with local districts to provide college-level, dual credit courses to students.”

The Director of Online Education will work to bolster ECC’s online learning opportunities for its students.

“This structure will enable us to focus on areas of strategic importance, as well as provide better administration of our academic programs. Two strategies for growing enrollment are expanding our work with high schools and providing online options, especially for working adults,” said Dr. Bauer.

New division chairs for humanities and fine arts, social sciences and math/engineering will report to the new Dean of Instruction. To lessen confusion, the Vice President of Instruction will now be known as the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Because of proposed budget cuts at the state level, the FY 2018 budget did not included raises for staff and faculty, but Dr. Bauer noted that employee raises are still on the table.

“The college will reassess revenue in early fall to determine whether raises can be applied during the fiscal year,” said Dr. Bauer. “After the start of the semester, we will have more precise figures on enrollment, local taxes and state aid. The board and I are hopeful the revenue picture at that time will allow for raises this year.”

Board of Trustees President Ann Hartley supported the strategy. “Faculty and staff members work so hard every day, and they deserve raises,” she explained. “I think it’s a smart move to hold off for a few months instead of waiting for an entire year to bring it up again.”

Security Camera Enhancement

Meanwhile, some major technology and security upgrades will soon be coming to the college. More than 100 high definition cameras will be purchased from Tyco Integrated Security, Inc. using dedicated security fees.

“This purchase will not only upgrade the cameras we currently have,” said Dr. Bauer, “but increase the number of cameras on campus. The cameras will allow the Union Police Department to remotely access campus cameras during a crisis. We believe this will be a great enhancement for security.”

The Union Police Department currently uses the same system with the Union School District and the Parks and Recreation Department.

Additionally, 57 new computers were approved for The Learning Center.

June 12, 2017 | Campus News

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded the East Central College Foundation, working on behalf of the ECC Adult Education and Literacy Program, an $8,000 grant to support its mission in 2017. This local grant award is part of more than $7.5 million in grants awarded to nearly 900 schools, nonprofits and organizations across the 44 states that Dollar General serves.

“We will use this grant to support our college and career readiness advocate Mary Eagan,” said AEL Director Alice Whalen. “She assists students enrolled in the adult education and literacy program – which serves 18 classes at 11 locations in Phelps, Crawford, Gasconade and Franklin Counties.  Mary helps students connect with Missouri Job Centers and other support agencies for employment, childcare and transportation assistance. The support of the East Central College Foundation was key to the success of the proposal.”

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation supports initiatives that help others improve their lives through literacy and education. Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $135 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than 8.6 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.

“There are more than 12,000 individuals in the six counties of the East Central College region in need of basic literacy skills services,” explained Whalen. “The college and career readiness advocate facilitates student success by helping them overcome barriers to the completion of their high school education.”

The East Central College Adult Education and Literacy program is free to the public. You can find out more about the program at www.eastcentral.edu/ael or call 636-584-6533.
