Nursing Student Awards
Each year, East Central College recognizes students for outstanding academic achievement, clinical excellence, leadership, and professionalism.
The Outstanding Nursing Student Award, selected by ECC nursing faculty, is given to graduates who have excelled both in the classroom and in clinical settings. These students often credit ECC with helping them realize their dreams of becoming nurses.
The Spirit of Clinical Excellence Award is presented by ECC’s healthcare partners—including Mercy Hospital Washington, Phelps Health in Rolla, and Missouri Baptist Hospital Sullivan—to students who demonstrate exceptional care, compassion, inquiry, critical thinking, and organizational skills.
ECC Nursing faculty from Union and Rolla campuses presented the awards, recognizing the graduates’ dedication and achievements.
This year, four students received special recognition:

A dedicated community leader, trusted professional, and proud East Central College graduate, Jim Strubberg has been named the recipient of the College’s 2025 Outstanding Alumni Award.
The award, presented by the East Central College Foundation, was given to Strubberg on May 17 during East Central College’s 55th Annual Commencement Ceremony.
Strubberg, New Haven, is the senior accountant at Leroy Strubberg & Associates, where he has built a respected career grounded in professionalism, reliability, and a deep understanding of the needs of local families and businesses.
“For decades, Strubberg has paired his accounting expertise with an unwavering commitment to service, making a lasting impact across Franklin County,” said Dr. Robyn Walter, ECC Vice President of Academic Affairs.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Strubberg has spent decades improving life in his community. He is instrumental in the success of the Franklin County Cattlemen’s Association, raising scholarship funds for local students alongside his wife, Sharon. Together, they travel the region with their grill, supporting events that strengthen rural communities.
In New Haven, Strubberg is a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus, serves on the Church Council at Assumption Catholic Church, and is active as a Eucharistic Minister and Financial Secretary for Council 7475. Each fall, he volunteers as a cashier at the Immaculate Conception Fall Festival. His support for first responders spans both New Haven and Union, where he has long aided local fire departments.
His contributions extend across numerous civic organizations. Strubberg has held leadership roles with the Union Area Chamber of Commerce, Union Development Corporation Board, Union Rotary Club, Kiwanis Club, and the Citizens Bank Board of Directors. He currently serves on the Union R-11 Foundation Board, is a life member of Union FFA, and serves as treasurer for both the Union Kiwanis Club and the Franklin County Cattlemen’s Association. He is also treasurer of the Franklin County FFA Foundation Board.
He has served on the United Way Board of Directors, is widely recognized for his hands-on work with 4-H, and is a member of the New Haven and Union Chambers of Commerce, the Missouri Society of Accountants, and the National Society of Accountants.
“Jim’s the kind of person who doesn’t just join organizations—he works hard for them,” said Dot Schowe, who nominated Strubberg for the award. “Whether he’s pulling the band trailer in parades across Missouri or pitching in at community events, he always shows up.”
Strubberg’s connection to East Central College runs deep. In addition to his own accomplishments, his wife, Sharon, and three of their four children are ECC graduates.
His lifelong dedication to community, family, and service truly embodies the spirit of the Outstanding Alumni Award. He has brought honor to East Central College not only through his achievements, but through the values he lives every day.
When Abrea Simmons was named the 2025 recipient of the Doyle Stricklin Memorial Award, she became part of a tradition that spans five decades—one built on academic excellence, high standards, and a lasting impact on students.
Simmons, of Union, was recognized during East Central College’s Student Achievement Night in April for her outstanding performance in accounting, professionalism, and dedication to her studies. Her achievement continues a tradition of excellence that defines one of ECC’s most meaningful academic honors.
This year’s award presentation marked a milestone: the 50th anniversary of the Stricklin Award. The moment was both a celebration of student success and a reflection on the legacy of the man behind it—Doyle Stricklin.
Stricklin taught accounting and business math at the then-East Central Junior College from 1973 until his untimely passing in 1976 at the age of 44. A native of Oklahoma, he held a degree in accounting from the University of Tulsa and an MBA from Southwest Missouri State College. Before joining the college, he worked as a certified public accountant and taught at the college level.
On campus, Stricklin quickly earned a reputation for setting high expectations, mentoring students, and helping them succeed. Under his guidance, ECJC students earned top finishes in regional competitions and discovered meaningful paths in the field of accounting.
Lisa Hanneken, Business and Accounting instructor, spoke about the significance of the award and praised Simmons during the ceremony.
“For 50 years, this award has recognized students who embody the same qualities that defined the man it honors—students who demonstrate academic excellence, campus involvement, leadership, and integrity,” Hanneken said.
“Abrea not only excels academically, but she also supports her peers, leads by example, and represents the very best of ECC in every setting.”
In addition to her academic accomplishments, Simmons was a student athlete, competing on ECC’s softball team with the same drive and discipline she brought to the classroom.
She also served as a Supplemental Instruction Leader, helping fellow students succeed. This fall, she will transfer to Lincoln University in Jefferson City to continue her accounting studies and compete as a Blue Tiger. She plans to pursue her CPA certification after completing her bachelor’s degree.
As East Central College marked 50 years of honoring Doyle Stricklin’s legacy, it also celebrated the future—one shaped by students like Abrea Simmons, who carry that legacy forward.
Three East Central College employees have been recognized for their commitment and contributions to students, colleagues, and the College community. Joannie Blakely, Dr. Nancy Mitchell, and Kim Aguilar are the 2025 recipients of the NISOD Excellence Award, a national honor presented by the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development to celebrate outstanding work at community and technical colleges across the country.
Blakely, Mitchell, and Aguilar were recognized in the following roles:
Joannie Blakely — Nursing Instructor and ECC Rolla Program Coordinator
Dr. Nancy Mitchell — Dean of Health Science and Director of Nursing
Kim Aguilar — Human Resources Generalist
Joannie Blakely
As a nursing instructor and program coordinator in Rolla, Blakely has earned a reputation for her organizational strength, relationship-building, and steady leadership. She plays a central role in securing and managing clinical placements for students—often going above and beyond to ensure quality learning experiences that align with high standards of patient care.
Colleagues note her calm and proactive approach when navigating challenges and her dedication to supporting both students and fellow faculty. She’s described as someone who makes new staff feel welcome and confident in their roles. “Joannie is an invaluable asset to the nursing program,” one nominator wrote. “She volunteers her time to help others succeed and exemplifies what it means to be a leader and a team player.”
Dr. Nancy Mitchell
Mitchell, who serves as Dean of Health Science and Director of Nursing, is recognized as a visionary leader, mentor, and dedicated advocate for excellence in health care education. Known for her insight and guidance, Dr. Mitchell plays a key role in program development and navigating complex accreditation processes.
Her colleagues emphasized her ability to lead through challenges while supporting her team with clarity and care. “Nancy’s influence extends far beyond her current role,” a nomination read. “She has mentored countless professionals over the years, always setting a high bar while helping others rise to meet it.”
Kim Aguilar
In her role as Human Resources Generalist, Aguilar is known for her professionalism, warmth, and tireless dedication. As part of ECC’s two-person HR team, Aguilar manages a wide range of HR functions with precision, while also offering consistent and personal support to employees.
Her colleagues describe her as a dependable presence with a deep understanding of ECC’s policies and culture. “Kim brings genuine kindness and professionalism to every interaction,” one nominator shared. “She’s the kind of person who makes others feel seen and supported—whether it’s during onboarding, a benefits question, or a difficult situation.”
In addition to her daily responsibilities, Aguilar is active on college committees and has served on the Classified Staff Association Executive Council. Her willingness to contribute wherever needed reflects a strong commitment to the college community.

Molly Bauer, a standout music student at East Central College, was named the 2025 recipient of the President’s Spirit of East Central College Award—an honor recognizing a student who exemplifies ECC’s core values through leadership, academic excellence, service, and integrity.
The award was presented during the 55th Annual Commencement Ceremony on May 17, where Molly graduated with an Associate of Fine Arts in Music.
Molly Bauer
With a 3.95 GPA, Molly made a remarkable impact at ECC both academically and artistically. She served as principal clarinetist for the ECC Band and performed in the ECC Concerto Concert.
Her musical achievements extended well beyond campus—she earned coveted spots in the All-Collegiate Band, the St. Louis Wind Symphony Youth Ensemble, and the St. Louis Youth Orchestra—a rare distinction for a student from a two-year college.
Molly was also a Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society member and a dedicated volunteer. She frequently performed at community and college events, including the ECC Patrons Donors Social, the Union Christmas Parade, and services at St. Peter’s UCC Church. She also shared her talents as a piano instructor at the Washington Academy of Music, inspiring the next generation of musicians.
“Molly’s professors describe her as positive, respectful, hard-working, and someone who always looks out for others,” said Sarah Leassner, Vice President of Student Development, who presented the award.
This fall, she will attend Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO) in Cape Girardeau.
Molly is the daughter of ECC President Dr. Jon Bauer and his wife, Barb, of Washington. While Dr. Bauer became aware of her selection after the decision was finalized, he was not involved in the nomination or selection process.
The award was based solely on her merit and determined independently by a committee of ECC faculty and staff.
Molly’s pursuit of growth, willingness to serve, and deep passion for music left a lasting impact at East Central College. She is a most deserving recipient of this year’s President’s Spirit Award.

East Central College will celebrate the next generation of nurses, teachers, machinists, coders, artists, and more during its 55th Annual Commencement on Saturday, May 17, at noon in the Donald D. Shook Student Center (DSSC) on the Union campus.
More than 250 graduates—the largest group in recent years—are expected to walk across the stage to receive degrees and certificates.
Due to the increasing number of participants, tickets are required this year for entry into the gymnasium. Overflow seating with a livestream will be available in The Dive on the first floor of DSSC, the reception tent outdoors in the Quad, and inside the John Edson Anglin Performing Arts Center in Hansen Hall.
“Commencement is always one of the most meaningful moments of the academic year,” said ECC President Dr. Jon Bauer. “It’s a time to celebrate our students’ achievements and look ahead to the future they are building for themselves, their families, and their communities.”
A reception will follow in the Quad, weather permitting, where graduates and guests can gather and celebrate together.
Recognition Events
The Commencement Ceremony is part of a full day of recognition activities:
Nursing Pinning Ceremony – 9 a.m.
Commencement Ceremony – 12 p.m.
High School Equivalency (HSE) Recognition Ceremony – 3 p.m.
All three ceremonies will be streamed live on East Central College’s Facebook page.
Tickets are not required for the Nursing Pinning or HSE ceremonies.
While there will be no keynote speaker this year, the Commencement program will include special faculty recognitions and the formal conferral of degrees and certificates.
Guest Information & Seating
Doors to the DSSC gymnasium will open at 11 a.m. Guests are asked to be seated and keep walkways clear during the processional and recessional of graduates and faculty.
Please note that confetti cannons will be used at the end of the ceremony. These will make a loud noise, which may startle some guests.
Ticketing Notes:
Separate tickets are required for floor and bleacher seating.
Floor seating is reserved for guests who cannot sit in bleachers; graduates requested this on their RSVP.
Small children sitting on a ticketed adult’s lap do not require a ticket.
Please check with your graduate about tickets prior to the ceremony.
To avoid congestion, guests are encouraged to prearrange a meeting spot outside the building following the ceremony.
