Industrial Engineering Tech Classes to be Offered in Rolla

November 2, 2020 | Campus News ECC Rolla

East Central College in Rolla is expanding its offerings to provide Introductory Manufacturing courses through the Industrial Engineering Technology (IET) program.

The two eight-week courses will be held in the Spring 2021 semester, that begins Tuesday, January 19.

According to Dr. Richard Hudanick, ECC’s dean of career and technical education, the manufacturing community in the Rolla area has expressed interest in IET training and the college is meeting their demand.

“It is exciting to push forward and help the manufacturers in the Rolla area. They companies have been asking for training and by offering these two courses — Intro to Manufacturing Processes and Maintenance Practices — sets the stage to support this community.”

The IET program teaches students to function as industrial machinery mechanics, maintenance technicians and engineering assistants — installing, maintaining and programming advanced manufacturing equipment.

Through the program, students receive training in machinery, maintenance and repair, basic electrical principles, motor controls, process controls, hydraulics, pneumatics, PLCs, robotics, computers, basic machinist skills and metallurgy.

Students also learn the problem solving, troubleshooting, teamwork, and self-management skills sought by business and industry.

Dr. Hudanick adds that “ECC’s Center for Workforce Development surveyed manufacturers in the Rolla area and there is a lot of enthusiasm about the College making a commitment to the area with technical manufacturing degree programming.”

The College also has an apprenticeship program where students will be able to attend the classes while they are working, and the apprenticeship program will cover the tuition costs for the eligible student.

“The IET program is a great pathway to support Apprenticeship opportunities and also provides area high school graduates who want to start a career in manufacturing.”

According to 2019 data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average salary of an Industrial Machinery Mechanic is $53,800 and the field is estimated to grow by over 13% in the next eight years.

In the future, ECC could further expand IET class offerings and eventually offer a degree.

“ECC is hopeful to offer an Associate of Applied Science degree in Industrial Engineering Technology degree at the Rolla campus. This degree transfers to several known universities for those pursuing a bachelor’s degree in the industrial engineering field.”

The Intro to Manufacturing Processes class is scheduled from January 20 – March 10.  That course is followed up by the Maintenance Practices course to be held March 21 -May 13. Both classes will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 5-7 p.m.

East Central College Board of Trustees Unanimously Approves New Strategic Plan

September 6, 2019 | Campus News Inspiring Excellence

East Central College’s five-year strategic plan, SOAR to 2024, was unanimously approved by the Board of Trustees at its August 26 meeting.

“I am grateful for the countless hours of work that have gone into the development of the plan,” said. Dr. Bauer. “We now turn our attention to implementation. I am excited and incredibly optimistic about what’s in store for East Central over the next five years.”

In 2018, East Central College partnered with CampusWorks to help design a strategic plan. Since that time, the company has worked closely with East Central College administration, faculty, staff, Board of Trustee members and the strategic planning committee to ensure that all stakeholders had a voice in the process.

“This plan is a big step forward for the college’s future,” said Ann Hartley, East Central College Board of Trustees president, “I am so proud of what has been accomplished in a relatively short amount of time.. The Board of Trustees is so appreciative of the involvement from our students, faculty and staff who helped make this possible.”

In January 2019, ECC hosted a region-wide Future Summit. All of the college’s constituents were invited and encouraged to participate. More than 200 people, from healthcare, manufacturing, education and more, engaged in discussions about East Central College’s future challenges and how to address them.

“Community input has been invaluable throughout this process,” said Dr. Bauer. “It allowed us to create a plan that truly reflects who we want to be as an institution and how we are going to get there.”

Students also took part in the strategic planning process. In February, more than 50 students came together in series of focus groups to provide input and ideas.

“The student focus groups helped us identify what an ideal student experience should look like at East Central College,” explained Dr. Bauer. “Our students want an environment that is academically challenging and personally meaningful.”

SOAR to 2024 features a new mission and vision for the college, as well as a new set of values. Additionally, five major strategies will help shape the future of the college. The “Pathways” strategy focuses on developing clear academic and career pathways with personalized support to increase enrollment and promote student success.

The “Partnerships” strategy focuses on strengthening partnerships with local high schools, higher education institutions and employers to drive intellectual and economic development in the region.

The “Employees” strategy concentrates on creating a culture of collaboration and learning to attract, retain and develop diverse and talented employees at the college.

Expanding East Central College’s presence and offerings in Rolla to enhance the college’s impact throughout the region is the mission of the “Rolla” strategy.

Finally, the “Financial Strength” strategy puts attention on securing financial strength in order to sustain institutional viability.

East Central College will continue to update the community on its progress throughout implementation of SOAR to 2024.

Paramedic Program Now Offering Distance Learning at ECC-Rolla

November 20, 2018 | Campus News ECC Rolla

Starting in 2019, East Central College-Rolla will utilize interactive distance technology to better serve students in its paramedic technology program. Students will also have access to on-location lab assistants who will be based on the Rolla campus.

“Previously, we partnered with the Rolla Technical Center to provide the paramedic technology program to area students,” said Tom Fitts, Associate Professor of EMT and Emergency Medical Services. “We are now offering the program just through East Central College.”

While students will need to complete some coursework at the Union location, using interactive distance technology will save time and be more convenient for students.

“We are also hoping to add additional clinical sites in the area,” said Fitts. “Our students will have more options closer to their home. Right now, students will only be on the Union campus an average of five times per semester.”

East Central College offers a program of study leading to an Associate of Applied Science degree and Certificate of Achievement in Paramedic Technology. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions. It is also accredited by the Missouri Bureau of Emergency Medical Services.

Doughnuts for Donations at ECC-Rolla

December 13, 2016 | Campus News ECC Rolla

Never underestimate the power of a sugary ring of dough. That’s the lesson nursing students at ECC-Rolla learned raising funds for charity this holiday season.

“The students had a pre-sale and took orders for the two weeks,” said Nursing Instructor Laura McDonald. “They also purchased additional doughnuts to sell in the commons.”

The response was overwhelming.

“Using just Krispy Kremes,” said McDonald, “they raised more than a thousand dollars!”

The funds raised went to help the Greater Rolla Area Charitable Enterprise, or G.R.A.C.E. The organization cares for the needs of those living in Edgar Springs, Newburg and Rolla School Districts who are in need of food or financial assistance to tide them over temporary difficulties.

Because of the success of the fundraiser, students were also able to buy new coats, gloves and hats to provide to elementary schools in Rolla, Salem, St. James, Cuba and Bourbon.

“It is a great feeling to know these students worked so hard to provide for two families with food and gift items, then to also provide ten coats to children throughout our local area.  I am very proud of the students and their effort to be able to help so many people,” said McDonald.
