East Central College Precision Machining Program Earns Full Reaccreditation

April 26, 2019 | Campus News

The National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) has awarded the East Central College Precision Machining Program full reaccreditation. NIMS develops skills standards for the industry, certifies individual skills against the standards and accredits training programs that meet NIMS quality requirements.

“The NIMS representative was very complimentary of our classroom and lab learning environments, the curriculum, faculty credentials and the tremendous support from our advisory board and the college,” said Robyn Walter, vice president of academic affairs.

East Central College offers a robust curriculum centered on hands-on learning in professional CNC and machine tool labs in its Business and Industry Center. Students are taught by qualified instructors who’ve had working careers with manufacturing companies. At the end of the program, students can earn an associate of applied science, certificate of achievement or certificate of specialization.

Precision machining students also earn the industry recognized NIMS credential and the National Career Readiness Certificate. “NIMS is the industry standard for training and skill validation within precision manufacturing,” said Walter. “It is certainly a mark of quality and employers are interested in graduates with a NIMS certificate.”

According to the East Central College Center for Workforce Development, Franklin County has more than four times the manufacturing establishments than any other county in our service region. They make up near 25 percent of all jobs in the area, higher than any other category.

After 20 Years, A Scuba Instructor Heads Back to College

April 24, 2019 | Campus News

Labadie, Missouri isn’t known for its vast opportunities to scuba dive. That didn’t stop James Johnson from pursuing it anyway.

“When I learned to dive it changed not only my perspective of the world, but it also changed my outlook on life,” he said. “I enjoy diving so much I became a scuba instructor. I get great satisfaction watching it change the lives of my students.”

While his love for scuba is unwavering, he knew it wasn’t his complete future.

“Unfortunately, teaching scuba is not a profession that will pay the bills in the Midwest,” he explained. “So, I began my search for a career that not only interests me, but something I felt could help people and possibly change their lives.”

Johnson was already trained to teach CPR and first aid and is always the first to offer help when someone is injured.

“A career in nursing just felt like a natural path for me to take,” he said. “Nursing gives me the opportunity to help people not only when in good health, but also when they might need it the most.”

After nearly a 20-year gap, he decided to go back to college.

“East Central College has been great so far,” he said. “I’m impressed by the academic services offered here such as the Learning Center, and the ambition of my instructors for their students to succeed.”

Johnson thought fitting in socially might be one of his biggest challenges. “After starting classes, it did not take long to see the diversity in age of ECC’s students,” he explained. “It’s been interesting to share my life experiences with some of the younger students.”

Johnson is currently taking general education requirements this semester and is working toward his Associate of Applied Science in Nursing.

“My motivation to help others, have a stable income and a possibility for retirement keeps me on track to succeed.  I believe I’m better prepared for college at this point in my life than straight out of high school.”

Center for Workforce Development Hosts Talent Fair – April 30

April 23, 2019 | Campus News

The Center for Workforce Development (CWD) at East Central College is hosting an event to recruit talented community members to assist the department with providing workforce training programs.

A talent fair will be held Tuesday, April 30 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Business and Industry Center, 42 Prairie Dell Plaza Drive in Union, located southeast of the main ECC Campus.

CWD is looking to hire part-time trainers to use their skills and abilities to teach short-term training programs for the region’s local business and industry. The department provides workforce training to local businesses in various time periods of days, weeks or months.

“There is a wealth of talent in our area that hasn’t been fully tapped”, says Joel Doepker, Vice President of External Relations. “In addition to current workers, there are retirees from our local manufacturers, banks, health care and other industries that have the skills, knowledge and experience to train the current workforce.”

A range of skills are needed in a variety of areas such as safety training, industrial maintenance, customer service training, welding, Microsoft Office and other possibilities. A degree or certificate isn’t required as experience is highly desired. The CWD staff will help design the training plans and provide teaching guidelines.

East Central College Hires Director of Early College Programs

April 4, 2019 | Campus News

East Central College is taking steps to strengthen its early college programs at area high schools. At the April 1 Board of Trustees meeting, Megen Poytner was approved as the new Director of Early College Programs. The position, formerly known as the Director of Dual Credit and College Readiness, will coordinate, develop and maintain dual credit, dual enrollment, dual technical credit and early college high school programs.

“Ms. Poynter will work closely with counselors at our partner high schools to build enrollment and create pathways to enrollment as full-time East Central College students following high school graduation,” said President Dr. Jon Bauer.

“My top priority will be learning more about what each high school needs from ECC to foster improved communication and collaboration,” Poynter said. “I will also be pursuing accreditation for our early college programs, through the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP), an organization that works to ensure consistency between college and dual credit offerings.”

It’s a homecoming for Poynter, who spent nearly a decade as an employee of the college in various roles including Learning Center Specialist, Associate Registrar and Director of Admissions.

“As a graduate and former employee, ECC has shaped my life in countless, positive ways,” she explained. “I am grateful for this opportunity to give back.”

Most recently, she worked in Union High School as a college and career counselor for the Ayres Foundation, serving as a resource and advocate for students looking to enter or remain in post-secondary institutions and careers.

“I think it is important for ECC to have a dedicated person in this role,” she added. “Developing and maintaining stronger partnerships with our school districts will increase the number of students taking advantage of post-secondary opportunities close to home.”

Poynter received her master’s degree in education from the University of Missouri – St. Louis and her bachelor’s degree in media communications and public relations from Webster University.

Students Travel to London During Spring Break

April 3, 2019 | Campus News

While some students were relaxing over spring break, others were traveling abroad in London! More than a dozen students took part in the 11th annual trip with the ECC Art Club and Student Media Club.

“It is incredible to be with students as they experience the world in new and transformative ways,” said Assistant Professor of English and Journalism Leigh Kolb. She traveled with the students on the trip. “From navigating a new city to taking in Shakespeare, it’s always moving to watch students grow as individuals on a trip like this. Travel is such an important part of learning how to be human, and we always hope that this trip is one that is an important step in a lifelong journey for our students.”

The students made the most of the week-long trip – visiting The British Museum, British Library, Tate Modern, V&A Museum, National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, Shakespeare’s Globe and Canterbury Cathedral. They also saw a performance of Richard II at the Sam Wanamaker Theater.

There was a different element to the trip this year as well. Students were able to perform community service with Art4Space in South London.

“Our students stepped in to assist with the large-scale ceramic mosaic for the St. Andrews Primary School,” said Assistant Professor of Art Adam Watkins. “Students helped finish handmade ceramic tile ornaments from the K-3 students. It was an amazing experience, and probably the best day of any trip over the past 11 years, as our students learned about community outreach and engagement, the world of nonprofits and ultimately being able to participate in a community project that will be visible for many years to come.”

For student Joshua German, the trip was about more than just sightseeing. He was able to connect with relatives he’d never met before!

“They were super fantastic, and it was great to make some connections in London. They wasted no time in accepting me into the family and treating me great,” he explained. “We went to Gloucester Cathedral together. They made me English tea, Cornish pastries, sausage rolls and fish and chips. It was a really great experience meeting them and I want to do it again!”

The trip is completely self-funded by students. Many fundraisers were held throughout the year to help with expenses.
