AEL Instructor to Retire After 13 Years

December 17, 2020 | Campus News

Don Boettcher is hanging up his hat after 13 years as an instructor with East Central College’s Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) Program.

Boettcher, 87, taught college and career readiness classes. That Includes assisting students who did not have a high school diploma prepare for the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET), formerly called the GED.

According to Alice Whalen, AEL director, Boettcher cared deeply about his job as an instructor and each student he taught.

“Don has adapted to many changes in the adult education program over the years, but his care and support for the students has never changed,” she said, “He has always shown the greatest care and concern for their success.”

His AEL teaching career began after he got a call from ECC in 2007 to teach GED classes.

The college was offering high school equivalency classes in the Gerald area and needed someone nearby to teach evening classes.

Boettcher taught HiSET prep courses two nights a week at New Life Tabernacle in Gerald. He taught students a variety of subjects to help prepare them for the test.

After teaching students in the Gerald area for a few years, Boettcher taught at the Sullivan class site.

About Boettcher

Boettcher and his wife, MaryJane, live in Sullivan. He is originally from Cleveland, Ohio. The couple moved to Missouri in 1965.

He had served in the U.S. Air Force in the 1950s, and later he worked as a market researcher for a Canadian-owned brewing company. When the couple moved to Missouri Boettcher was a market planning manager, and at one point he worked at an advertising firm.

AEL Program

ECC’s AEL program offers several programs to help adult learners with workforce training skills, English Language Acquisition, Communication and Customer Service Certificate Programs and much more.

AEL instructors must have a bachelor’s degree, pass a fingerprint background check and complete training for certification once hired.

Volunteers with the program must complete a Missouri background check and complete virtual training with the East Central Area Literacy Council.

Area residents interested in becoming instructors or classroom assistants may call 636-584-6533 or email ael@eastcentral.edu.

Consortium Launches Website for Job Seekers

December 7, 2020 | Campus News

Missouri employers seeking job-ready talent have a new free resource at their fingertips.

The Missouri Community Colleges Jobs Consortium website, powered by College Central Network, Inc. (CCN), now hosts free job posting for employers statewide.

Through the new website, CollegeCentral.com/moccjobs, it is easy for employers of any size to register once and then post an unlimited number of jobs to Missouri’s community college students and alumni.

The jobs posted on the site can reach tens of thousands of job seekers from East Central College, Jefferson College, Mineral Area College, Moberly Area Community College, Ozarks Technical Community College, St. Charles Community College, State Fair Community College, and Three Rivers College.

“Although we are separate and independent local colleges, we have a common goal of working together to meet both state and local employment needs,” stated Steffani McCrary, career services coordinator at East Central College.

The resource simplifies hiring, even with temporarily closed or restricted campuses, and students learning from home.

“Through our Consortium, our combined undergraduate base is far-reaching,” McCrary added. “It offers our state’s employers the great diversity of students we have in Missouri — highly skilled, motivated, and ready to enter our workforce.”

CCN’s Career Services Central is the exclusive online career office management platform for career centers at all schools participating in the Consortium.

The Missouri Community Colleges Jobs Consortium website allows employers to easily recruit the state’s home-grown entry-level talent by removing as many barriers as possible, simplifying the hiring process.

CCN was founded in 1997 to connect employers with qualified emerging talent candidates. More than two million employers have already registered to utilize the Network to post jobs and recruit students and alumni for entry-level jobs.

CollegeCentral.com is free for alumni or students enrolled in college nationwide.

October 20, 2020 | Campus News Performing Arts Theatre

Join the East Central College Theatre Department on campus next week for a chilling theatrical experience featuring storytelling and surprises.

Tales from the Shadows is a unique outdoor event that includes a journey around campus led by a “Ghoul Guide.” Tickets are on sale now for the Halloween-themed performance scheduled for Oct. 28-30.

According to ECC Theatre Director Grace Austin, plans for Tales from the Shadows spawned from the desire for an interactive event on campus.

“It came out of an idea for people to see more of the campus while at the same time being able to participate in an immersive event, which is new to the department,” she said.

There will be walking tours of up to 10 people that will depart every 15 minutes beginning at 6:30 p.m. each night. The tours are designed for social distancing and face masks will be required.

To purchase tickets visit www.ecctheatre.com or call the ECC Box Office at 636-584-6693. This activity is recommended for ages 13 and up.

During the event, tour guides will lead guests around campus to several stops where they will encounter strange mysteries, scary creatures, and a few surprises along the way.

Each tour lasts approximately 70 minutes, and it will include students as actors and guides.

Austin noted that she and colleagues Bess Moynihan and Sylvia Sellers, developed the Tales from the Shadows concept while discussing options for a Halloween production.

Bess, Sylvia, and I were tossing around some ideas for Halloween and we came up with a concept of hiring some master storytellers from St. Louis to work with the students to create a walking tour,” Austin added.

On hand for the “Tales from the Shadows” will be Hazel’s Back Porch BBQ, Montelle Winery, Sweet Kettle Corn Co., Happy Apples, S’mores, and more for ticket holders before and after the tours.

Ribbon Cutting Marks New Era at East Central College

October 5, 2016 | Campus News

East Central College faculty and staff, community leaders and business partners will be on hand October 20 at 4 p.m. for the ribbon cutting of the new Business and Industry Center located at 42 Prairie Dell Plaza in Union. The public is also invited to take tours of the new $5 million facility.

The Business and Industry Center (BIC) will serve as the new home of ECC’s precision machining, industrial engineering technology and HVAC programs. Lab and classroom space to accommodate short-term welding programs are also planned for the building. The college’s Center for Workforce Development also will be located in the facility, which will allow for the expansion of training opportunities.

“This project truly marks the beginning of an exciting chapter at East Central College,” said ECC President Dr. Jon Bauer. “It will not only create more career opportunities for our students but will serve as the workforce training provider for our region’s business and industry.”

Growth in jobs over the next several years, regionally, statewide and nationally, will take place primarily in technical careers that require an associate degree and certifications. The 28,808 square foot building will prepare students for this growing workforce and help companies become more competitive through training of existing employees.

The funding for the building is comprised of a $1.2 million Economic Development Administration grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Commerce, a $1 Million USDA Rural Economic Development loan, the ECC Foundation’s capital campaign and institutional funding.

Friends of the Library Book Sale Open to Public

September 21, 2016 | Campus News

ECC is holding its annual “Friends of the Library Book Sale” on Oct. 10-12 from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The sale helps raise funds for college activities and provides affordable reading options for the public.

Rather than paying full price for a used book online, ECC Library Services Director Lisa Farrell encourages students and community members alike to stop by. “We’ve seen many great fiction titles go quickly for 50 cents a paperback and $1.00 for hardbacks, including textbooks – it’s quite a steal.” The cost of each book ranges from 50 cents to one dollar. Sale items range from fiction and non-fiction books, recent magazines, and popular movies.

Donations from the public are being accepted through Sept. 30 with a request that Readers’ Digest or Encyclopedia sets not be sent. Various donations include fiction and non-fiction books, recent magazines, and popular movies.

Friends of the Library allocates book sale funds to support free raffle drawings during Falcon Fest, snacks during finals week, and additional movies for the circulating collection.
