Big Machines Appear on Campus – September 24

September 16, 2016 | Campus News

ECC Library and Scenic Regional Library (SRL) invites community members of all ages to their annual “Big Machines” event on Saturday, Sept. 24 from 10 a.m. – noon in ECC’s east parking lot. The free event will showcase bulldozers, cement mixer, lumber trucks, emergency vehicles and more.

ECC Library Services Director Lisa Farrell expects another large crowd this year. “The big hit last year was the sewer truck,” Farrell said. “Kids had a blast interacting with the truck’s camera that was in the drainage system.”

New to the event this year will be a passport that acts as a check list with all showcased vehicles. Passports will be provided for spectators who wish to mark-off vehicles as they make their way around the parking lot.

“Big Machines” won’t be the only attraction at ECC. The SRL is bringing the library to the event with their bookmobile. Visitors are welcome to walk through the library-on-wheels and check-out books with a valid library card.

Friends of the Library will sell popcorn, hot dogs and drinks, and 99.9 KFAV FM will provide music. ECC students will help assist children and offer face painting.

SRL encourages visitors to bring an ID and proof of residency to sign up for a library card. Individuals with big or unusual vehicles may volunteer by contacting the Union Branch Library at (636) 583-3224 or ddisbro@scenicregional.org.

Financial Aid Assistance to be Offered at ECC

On select Thursday evenings during this Fall semester, East Central College will be holding FAFSA Nights. These public sessions will assist students and their families in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is an online form where students who will be attending college apply for financial aid. Filling out the form is a requirement for any student that needs financial aid for the coming school year.

The sessions will be held in Buescher Hall, Room 182 from 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. on October 6 and 20, November 3 and 17 and December 1.

Those attending the sessions need to bring a Social Security Number, driver’s license or government issued ID, W-2 forms and records of other income and a 2015 Federal Income Tax Return of both the student and the parent.

Other important documentation includes untaxed income records, veteran’s non-education benefit records, child support received and/or paid, worker’s compensation and any investment records. Those who are not U.S. citizens should bring an alien registration or permanent resident card.

Those who are unable to attend these sessions can also receive assistance during normal business hours at the Union and Rolla campuses. It is important to note that anyone wanting to attend this event is not required to enroll at ECC; FAFSA Nights were designed as a public service.

Information about FAFSA Nights can also be easily accessed by calling 636.584.6588 or by visiting www.EastCentral.edu/FinAid.

Intersession Classes Begin December 16

December 4, 2015 | Campus News

Individuals will have the opportunity to earn college credit over the holiday break by enrolling in one of the online courses that East Central College is offering.

These short-term online classes will allow any student to acquire three hours of college credit over a four-week period between the fall and spring semesters.

Intersession dates are December 16, 2015, through January 12, 2016.

“We are pleased to be able to offer several general education courses during our Intersession,” said Shelli Allen, ECC vice president of student development.  “The expansion of our efforts in online education and filling a need for students with these month-long, intersession offerings is exciting.”

Courses on the Intersession schedule include Intro to Life Science, Oral Communications, English Composition I and U.S. Government.

“Whether students attend ECC or another college or university, taking an Intersession class could allow them to have a lighter course schedule in a future semester and gives them an opportunity to improve their grade point average,” Allen noted.  “We have students who need to regain or maintain eligibility for Missouri’s A+ scholarship program, so focusing on doing well in one course gives them that chance.”

To be eligible to enroll in an Intersession class, students must have completed nine credit hours with a minimum GPA of 2.5.  Interested students from other colleges should consult with their home institution, which will determine course equivalency credit. Some prerequisite courses may be required.

In-district students pay just $330 for class tuition and fees.  The rate for out-of-district students is $435 per class.  There is an additional charge for books.

For more information about Intersession courses visit the website, call 636-584-6547 or email rachel.howard@eastcentral.edu.

College Partners with Clemco to Offer MIG Welding Classes

April 2, 2015 | Campus News

East Central College is partnering with Clemco Industries to provide an Introduction to MIG Welding program.  On Wednesday, March 25, ECC’s Center for Workforce Development awarded certificates of completion to participants in the first Introduction to MIG Welding program held at the Washington manufacturer.

Five students completed the eight-week program. The training included OSHA10 certification, a National Career Readiness certificate, and five weeks of welding instruction.

Arnie Sallaberry, president of Clemco Industries, says Clemco is proud to be part of East Central’s MIG welding training program. “East Central has become a valued partner in so many aspects of our business and this program is just one more example of how ECC has worked hard to connect with the needs of local manufacturers.”

Mardy Leathers, executive director of ECC’s Center for Workforce Development, says the response to the program has been tremendous. “We are offering this program at four locations in our service area and we’re at capacity. In fact, we are considering expanding the program at Clemco to meet the high demand.”

The Introduction to MIG Welding program is funded by Missouri Manufacturing WINs, a U.S. Department of Labor grant-funded program that serves Trade Act participants as well as veterans, unemployed and underemployed individuals, and low-skilled persons in Missouri in manufacturing-related programs.

The MoManufacturingWINs program provides qualified students with low-cost or no-cost training in high-demand, high-growth industries at proven training institutions such as ECC.  Personal assistance is provided along the way from trained, professional career coaches and other college staff. In addition, recognized certifications such as the National Career Readiness Certificate can be obtained, giving students opportunities to enhance their employability and competitiveness in the job market.

The welding program will be offered every eight weeks throughout the year at Clemco Industries on Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday evenings.  Registrations are now being accepted for upcoming classes.  Qualified students will need to pay a $40 fee and supply certain materials. The program is being offered at several locations in the area in addition to Clemco.

Summer & Fall Enrollment Now Underway

March 16, 2015 | Campus News

Registration is now underway for summer session and fall semester classes at East Central College.

Shelli Allen, vice president of student development, encourages anyone who is considering enrollment to contact the college as soon as possible to start the registration process since some class sections will fill quickly.

“Summer classes begin Monday, June 1,” Allen stated.  “Although applying for admission is easy and can be done online, completing the basic skills assessment and submitting financial aid information requires more time.  We encourage students to start the process now instead of waiting until May.  That way, students have time to get their classes scheduled, purchase their books and still plan for vacation and other summer activities,” she said.  “This is also the right time for students who are coming home from other colleges for the summer to pick up a couple of classes. If they talk with advisors at the institution they currently attend, summer is perfect for picking up some low-cost credits that they can transfer back.”

Allen stated that general advisors on the main campus in Union are available every weekday to meet with people individually and help them through the registration process.  She encourages new and returning students seeking more information to contact ECC at 636-584-6588.   Information is also available on the college’s website: www.eastcentral.edu.

In addition to classes on the Union campus, ECC is offering classes this summer in Rolla, Sullivan, and Washington.

Fall Semester Registration Open

New students who plan to attend ECC in the fall should contact the college now to start the registration process.  “We gave our current students the opportunity to register early, and opened registration for new students March 23,” noted Allen.

Allen stated that all students are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine their eligibility for financial aid.  The application is available online at studentaid.gov.  “Many of our students utilize the payment plan which allows them to spread out the cost of tuition and fees over several months,” she said.  “We also accept payment by credit card.”

“We’re proud that ECC continues to be an affordable, high-quality choice in education,” said Allen.  Tuition and general fees are just $95 per credit hour for in-district students and $130 per credit hour for those who live outside the college district.

Missouri residents age 65 or older can take advantage of ECC’s Senior Citizens Waiver.  Those citizens pay just $57 in fees for each three-credit-hour class, plus the cost of books.
