Tihen and Little Receive Outstanding Student Award

May 16, 2016 | Campus News

Anna Marie Tihen of Washington and Zeke Little of Quincy, Illinois, both received Outstanding Student Awards for 2016 at East Central College’s May 14 commencement exercises.  The award is the highest honor given to a graduate of ECC, and this year the voting by faculty and staff ended in a tie.

To be considered for the honor an ECC student must have maintained a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.  In addition to academic achievements, participation in campus and community activities is also considered.

Shelli Allen, vice president of student development, made the presentation.

Anna Marie Tihen

A Washington area resident, Tihen has maintained a 4.0 grade point average while pursuing Associate of Arts and Associate of Fine Arts degrees in music.  At ECC she has been very involved with the music department serving as accompanist for various choral groups and individual students.  In addition to serving as a student music ambassador and tutor for music history students, she teaches piano lessons and performs at various functions on campus and in the community.  This year she received honorable mention at the Missouri Music Teachers Association Collegiate Lower Division State Competition and was recently named ECC’s outstanding music student for 2015-16.

Her connection to East Central began when she was 10 years old as a member of the Children’s Chorale.  In 2010 she began taking piano lessons through ECC’s Community Education department.  Since becoming a full-time student in 2014, Tihen has been a member of Phi Theta Kappa scholastic honor society and graduates from ECC with highest honors.

Active in 4-H for many years, Tihen has served as president, community service coordinator, project leader and youth leader.  She helped coordinate the annual St. Pat’s Coronation, a major fundraiser for Franklin County 4-H youth projects.

Tihen has been extremely involved at River City Church and Living Bread Church as a pianist, vocalist, and children’s church and choir leader.  She has also served as a youth group leader and special events volunteer and coordinator.

The daughter of Ken and Lisa Marie Tihen, she has been awarded academic, music, and transfer scholarships to Missouri State University where she will major in piano performance.

Zeke Little

Little is a graduate of Notre Dame High School in Quincy, Illinois. As a health science major at ECC, he has attained a grade point average of 3.67.

A member of the ECC soccer team for two years, he was the starting goalkeeper for the Falcons.  Little was named First Team All-Conference by the Missouri Community College Athletic Conference coaches his freshman year while helping to guide East Central to a conference championship and back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association Region 16 championship games.  He was also named Academic All-Conference and All-Region his freshman year and will receive the same honors at the conclusion of this academic year. He is a member of ECC’s Chi Delta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa scholastic honor society.

This past season he was named to the Scholar All-American Second Team by the National Soccer Coaches Athletic Association and is projected to receive the NJCAA Award for Academic Excellence based on his current GPA.

As a high school student, Little participated in a variety of community service projects.  For the past two years, Little and the other members of the ECC soccer team have volunteered at the Missouri Special Olympics Spring Games and this spring helped at the Special Olympic soccer tournament.

The son of Kelly and Pete Little, he has been awarded academic and athletic scholarships to attend Quincy University in the fall.  He plans to major in nursing at QU and will be a member of the Hawks soccer team.

Intersession Classes Begin December 16

December 4, 2015 | Campus News

Individuals will have the opportunity to earn college credit over the holiday break by enrolling in one of the online courses that East Central College is offering.

These short-term online classes will allow any student to acquire three hours of college credit over a four-week period between the fall and spring semesters.

Intersession dates are December 16, 2015, through January 12, 2016.

“We are pleased to be able to offer several general education courses during our Intersession,” said Shelli Allen, ECC vice president of student development.  “The expansion of our efforts in online education and filling a need for students with these month-long, intersession offerings is exciting.”

Courses on the Intersession schedule include Intro to Life Science, Oral Communications, English Composition I and U.S. Government.

“Whether students attend ECC or another college or university, taking an Intersession class could allow them to have a lighter course schedule in a future semester and gives them an opportunity to improve their grade point average,” Allen noted.  “We have students who need to regain or maintain eligibility for Missouri’s A+ scholarship program, so focusing on doing well in one course gives them that chance.”

To be eligible to enroll in an Intersession class, students must have completed nine credit hours with a minimum GPA of 2.5.  Interested students from other colleges should consult with their home institution, which will determine course equivalency credit. Some prerequisite courses may be required.

In-district students pay just $330 for class tuition and fees.  The rate for out-of-district students is $435 per class.  There is an additional charge for books.

Student Services staff at the Union campus will be available Monday through Thursday until 6 p.m. to assist new and returning students.  Shelli Allen, vice president of student development at ECC, noted that general advisors at the Union campus will also be available Saturday, December 12, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Enrollment Center staff will handle registrations and cashiers will be available to process payment until 2 o’clock.  Placement testing will begin at 9 a.m.

”Students can still apply for financial aid for the spring semester, but they will not receive authorization until after the holiday break,” said Allen.  “To hold their enrollment, students can pay with cash, check or credit card.  We also have a payment plan option to spread the cost out over several months.” Allen encourages prospective new students to bring their 2014 tax documents along when they visit campus to make the financial aid process easier.

Allen emphasizes the range of classes offered at the college, from basic to transfer-level.  “We have classes available in math and English which are designed to meet the needs of new students no matter what their skill level,”  Allen notes. “Students can work their way up from the basic skills through transfer classes which can be applied toward a degree at a four-year school.”

Career and technical education courses are available for students seeking employable skills with a certificate or degree from ECC in fields such as nursing, graphic design, precision machining, industrial engineering technology and culinary arts at the Union campus.

Summer & Fall Enrollment Now Underway

March 16, 2015 | Campus News

Registration is now underway for summer session and fall semester classes at East Central College.

Shelli Allen, vice president of student development, encourages anyone who is considering enrollment to contact the college as soon as possible to start the registration process since some class sections will fill quickly.

“Summer classes begin Monday, June 1,” Allen stated.  “Although applying for admission is easy and can be done online, completing the basic skills assessment and submitting financial aid information requires more time.  We encourage students to start the process now instead of waiting until May.  That way, students have time to get their classes scheduled, purchase their books and still plan for vacation and other summer activities,” she said.  “This is also the right time for students who are coming home from other colleges for the summer to pick up a couple of classes. If they talk with advisors at the institution they currently attend, summer is perfect for picking up some low-cost credits that they can transfer back.”

Allen stated that general advisors on the main campus in Union are available every weekday to meet with people individually and help them through the registration process.  She encourages new and returning students seeking more information to contact ECC at 636-584-6588.   Information is also available on the college’s website: www.eastcentral.edu.

In addition to classes on the Union campus, ECC is offering classes this summer in Rolla, Sullivan, and Washington.

Fall Semester Registration Open

New students who plan to attend ECC in the fall should contact the college now to start the registration process.  “We gave our current students the opportunity to register early, and opened registration for new students March 23,” noted Allen.

Allen stated that all students are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to determine their eligibility for financial aid.  The application is available online at studentaid.gov.  “Many of our students utilize the payment plan which allows them to spread out the cost of tuition and fees over several months,” she said.  “We also accept payment by credit card.”

“We’re proud that ECC continues to be an affordable, high-quality choice in education,” said Allen.  Tuition and general fees are just $95 per credit hour for in-district students and $130 per credit hour for those who live outside the college district.

Missouri residents age 65 or older can take advantage of ECC’s Senior Citizens Waiver.  Those citizens pay just $57 in fees for each three-credit-hour class, plus the cost of books.
