Bag Twining with Repurposed Materials (Spring 2025)
Course Description
This course introduces the student to the ancient native American traditions of twining by making a simple twined bag which can be used as a purse, carrier, or tote bag. The course will include a history of Cherokee twining and its comparisons to other textile processes. The choices of materials will emphasize the use of non-traditional repurposed materials such as scrap cotton and polyethylene.
Students will learn how to:
- set up a twining loom and begin a bag project.
- select and prepare natural and synthetic materials.
- apply stitch variations, color choices, and patterns.
- finish the bottoms and add straps.
Instructors will guide students in all phases and they will have time between sessions to proceed with their projects out of class.
Each student will receive their own loom to take home.
2 hours each session, 5 sessions held weekly, total of 10 hours.
