The Things You Cannot See – CLASS IS FULL

Did you know that you are made of cells? In this class, you will get a chance to see your own cells and make paintings using bacteria. Students will learn to use microscopes, learn about microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, and other) an have a chance to use scientific equipment, including making your own slides and looking at them under the microscope.  Ages 8 – 14.

Robotics and Computer Programming (1) – CLASS IS FULL

Students will have an awesome time building robots that can navigate obstacle courses and respond to a multitude of sensors, including motion, touch, and sound. Our students work with the LEGO® Mindstorms base kit to master the programming of basic movements, and then progress to more difficult challenges. Our goal is to make science, technology, engineering and mathematics irresistibly FUN. You must be 9-12 years old to attend this camp.

Newborn/Pediatric Nursing: How to Care for Baby (1) – CLASS IS FULL

Do you have a child that is interested in the field of newborn/pediatric Nursing? A child that is expecting a new sibling? Do you have a child that loves babies? Then this would be a great class for them! Ages 5-7.

Students will learn about newborn care from a Pediatric Nurse and one of East Central College’s own Nursing Instructors! In this four-hour class, we will discuss topics that pertain to normal newborn care. Some of the topics that will be discussed include:

  • Breastfeeding and bottle feeding

Are you a youth who has never shot a bow and arrow before and you’re not sure how to get started? Learn the basics of shooting the bow and arrow utilizing some of the techniques and methods that have been adopted by the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP). This program will teach the fundamentals of archery including equipment, safety, stance, and shooting techniques. This course is for youth 10 years of age or older, with the desire to shoot a bow and arrow, but have little or no experience. Learn archery shooting fundamentals while gaining knowledge about equipment options and choices. Note: All equipment will be provided by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Not recommended for students with shoulder or back injuries.

Outdoor Photography and Basic Editing – CLASS IS FULL

Students will learn techniques for doing basic outdoor digital photography. A portion of the class will be hands-on photography along with some very basic editing done on photos taken that day. It will be best if the student has a hand-held camera that has a removable SD memory card. There will be outdoor activity, weather permitting, students will visit tall grass prairie plots on ECC campus to photograph landscapes, flowers, grasses, and insects. The class will happen rain or shine, unless it is pouring rain, a light jacket or poncho might be needed. Shoes may get muddy or wet. Ages 11-16.

Students should wear long pants and appropriate shoes for walking in tall grass (no open-toed shoes, sandals or flip-flops).  Insect repellent is a must and students should bring their own, especially if they are sensitive to it.

Mammals of Missouri 

Explore the diversity of mammals in our state. Observe hands-on items such as mammal furs, skulls, and tracks to learn about different types of mammals in our state. Recognize some mammals by sound or smell alone. Answer questions such as: “Who sleeps during the day?”, “Does a flying squirrel fly?”, and “What does it meant to ‘know your species by their feces’?” Come “warm up” to our fellow furry Missouri residents by learning more about what they need to survive and flourish. Participants will make a plaster cast from their favorite Missouri animal track. Ages 10-18.

A Microscope World

This class may be taken after “The Things You Cannot See” or by students who have experience using microscopes. In this class, you will get a chance to see a number of very tiny things that are all around us every day, but are too small to see without a microscope. Once thousands of them get together, we can see them with the naked eye.  Ages 10 – 14.

Robotics and Computer Programming (2) – CLASS IS FULL

Students will have an awesome time building robots that can navigate obstacle courses and respond to a multitude of sensors, including motion, touch, and sound. Our students work with the LEGO® Mindstorms base kit to master the programming of basic movements, and then progress to more difficult challenges. This class will learn to make their own dough and sauce for their pizza, as well as a trip to greenhouse. Fishing 

Have you thought about a career in sport fishing? Students will gain knowledge in the world of fishing for catfish and other species. The instructor will describe multiple areas for you to focus your attention and energy on, instruct on angling methods, identify multiple rigging methods, and bait. Learn to analyze nature’s effects on fishing, outline water clarity and lures that are best for offsetting the color changes, and apply boat and bank positioning. The instructor will summarize Spring/Fall/Winter staging areas, ways to locate fish in different bodies of water. Learn to analyze structure and how to fish each situation. Ages 13 – 18.

Teen Deputy Summer Academy

Are you interested in learning more about a career in law enforcement? Join the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department in a weeklong program to explore the skills necessary to become a deputy sheriff and what you can expect to learn in a law enforcement training program. Topics covered include constitutional law, traffic regulations, ethics, SWAT, K9 and so much more! Ages 14-18 (high school).

Outdoor Photography and Basic Editing (2) – CLASS IS FULL

Students will learn techniques for doing basic outdoor digital photography. A portion of the class will be hands-on photography along with some very basic editing done on photos taken that day. It will be best if the student has a hand-held camera that has a removable SD memory card. There will be outdoor activity, weather permitting, students will visit tall grass prairie plots on ECC campus to photograph landscapes, flowers, grasses, and insects. The class will happen rain or shine, unless it is pouring rain, a light jacket or poncho might be needed. Shoes may get muddy or wet. Ages 11-16.

Students should wear long pants and appropriate shoes for walking in tall grass (no open-toed shoes, sandals or flip-flops).  Insect repellent is a must and students should bring their own, especially if they are sensitive to it.

This summer course is designed to teach older, beginning robotics students how to experiment with the application of simple machines in a robotic environment. Each student will be assigned his/her own LEGO® Mindstorms EV3 robot to use. Participants will learn the core concepts of robot design and EV3 programming. This program is designed for the students who love to tinker and build things that move. Brought to you by Kaleidoscope Discovery Center. Ages 10-14.
