In addition, Mercy Hospital Washington was recognized with the Distinguished Business/Industry Award. The hospital was nominated by ECC as an outstanding example of a corporation on a regional stage while providing outstanding local community leadership.

Hartley has worked with the college president to develop a formal orientation process for new board members, and she has developed an evaluation instrument and process that enables the board to collectively participate in the annual evaluation of the president.

“Ann embraces the community college mission, understands the important role of the board in the effective governance of the college, and works devotedly as an ambassador of East Central,” said Dr. Jon Bauer, ECC president.

Alumni Award

Schowe graduated from ECC in 1977 and transferred to Central Missouri State University where she received her bachelor’s degree in public relations in 1979.

She returned to ECC and worked in many areas of the college over the next 36 years. She retired in 2016 as the as the director of public relations.

For over thirty years, Mercy Hospital Washington has supported health care programming at ECC, including sharing qualified staff to serve as adjunct faculty.

While President and CEO Eric Eoloff and his leadership team have led the hospital, ECC has expanded the scope of support and partnerships through the shared common vision of the college and hospital for healthcare in the community.

Classified Staff Award

Bellville has held the position of Classified Staff Association (CSA) President for the past eight years, and she has been an exceptional leader in that role.

She encourages CSA members to attend MCCA events and webinars. Bellville is an ECC Patrons of the Art member and actively contributes on college-wide committees, including the Higher Learning Commission Task Force.

Her dedication to the faculty, staff and students’ needs inspires others to commit to ECC’s mission of empowering students and enriching communities through education.

The Future of Health Care in the Community

October 14, 2020 | Campus News

These first-year East Central College nursing students are beginning their journey into the health care field.

The students were in full uniform Tuesday, Oct. 13, for clinical orientation day. Clinicals are a vital, hands-on portion of the nursing program curriculum.

This is the first semester in the ECC Nursing program for these students who were pictured during their Fundamentals of Nursing course.

The classroom and clinical components of the curriculum are interrelated to provide a strong background for students to become safe and competent practitioners.

ECC offers two programs leading to an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing, which prepare students to become registered nurses.

Nursing Program Ranked No. 4 in Midwest

October 7, 2020 | Campus News

The East Central College Nursing Program is ranked No. 4 among 660 nursing schools offering associate’s degrees in the Midwest.

NursingProcess.org evaluated nursing schools throughout the region on four factors — national test pass rates, academic quality, the nursing school’s reputation and affordability.

In addition, the ECC Nursing associate’s degree program was ranked first in the state.

Nancy Mitchell, Director of Nursing and Dean of Health Science, said she is thrilled to be recognized as one of the “Best ADN Programs in the Midwest” by the nursing organization.

“This recognition showcases our programs commitment to nursing excellence and excellence in nursing education,” she said.

The evaluation was weighted heavily on National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) pass rates over the last four years. Those rates totaled 60 percent of the total ranking.

“Year to year, ECC nursing pass rates are well above the state and national averages,” Mitchell noted.

The remaining 40 percent of the evaluation was based on academic quality, 20 percent; nursing school’s reputation, 10 percent; and affordability, 10 percent.

“Our programs are known throughout our service region for excellence and rigor,” Mitchell added. “Our students are well prepared to enter the workforce upon graduation and to be successful for years to come.

“ECC nursing faculty, students and graduates are the backbone of our success.”

This is not the first recognition for the ECC Nursing program this year. In April, the Nursing Schools Almanac ranked ECC in the Top 10 among all nursing programs in Missouri.

Then in May, the nursing advocacy organization RegisteredNursing.org ranked the ECC Nursing Program No. 4 among 50 other programs statewide.

ECC Degrees

According to NursingProcess.org, jobs available for registered nurses with an associate’s degree are expected to grow by more than 500,000 by 2026.

ECC offers two programs leading to an Associate of Applied Science degree in nursing. These programs prepare students to become registered nurses.

The main campus in Union, as well as the Rolla site, offers a complete pre-licensure program (generic) for those interested in becoming a registered nurse.

An LPN to RN Bridge program also is available at the Rolla location for LPNs interested in becoming registered nurses.

McDonald Receives Excellence Award

October 6, 2020 | Campus News ECC Rolla

It was five years ago that Laura McDonald, MSN, RN started at East Central College as an adjunct instructor.

After just two years at the College, she became the Rolla Nursing Program Coordinator and began to oversee the day-to-day nursing program operations at the ECC Rolla campus.

McDonald recently was presented a National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Excellence Award to recognize her as a role model in education, and showcase the excellent work she does for ECC.

“After only two years as a nursing instructor, Laura stepped into the role of program coordinator overseeing 50 plus program students in two nursing tracks and advising over 100 pre-nursing students,” said the ECC representative who nominated McDonald.

She transitioned to a full-time nursing instructor after becoming a clinical adjunct instructor in 2015. McDonald then served as lead instructor while obtaining a masters degree in nursing education from Central Methodist University.

“Three short years ago she became program coordinator, with little experience, and she has done an excellent job leading and mentoring the nursing team in Rolla,” McDonald’s nominator said. “She has a remarkable work ethic and professional standards.

“Laura has done an outstanding job role modeling and developing new faculty members while upholding the program standards and policies, holding faculty and staff to professional standards to support and produce excellent nurses.”

It was further stated that McDonald is an advocate for faculty and students.

“She truly cares about their successes and failures. Laura has been the glue that has held the Rolla campus together the last few years. She is an outstanding faculty member and nurse clinician.”

Colleges that are members of NISOD can recognize employees through the Excellence Awards. The awards are presented to faculty and staff who are doing extraordinary work on their campuses.

Excellence Award recipients receives a unique silver medallion engraved with The University of Texas and NISOD insignias and are adorned with a burnt orange ribbon.

The overarching statement expressed through the award is that teaching and leading on the front lines of the community college mission rest on the shoulders of these outstanding individuals.

Military Spouse Finds Perfect Fit at East Central College

August 21, 2019 | Campus News

As a military spouse, Jessica Torres has moved from place to place, time and time again.

“I have had to start over eight times in the last 15 years,” she explained.

When she moved to the Ft. Leonard Wood area in 2017, she discovered East Central College in Rolla. She reached out to the nursing program immediately.

“From that moment, I knew my goal to become a registered nurse was no longer just a thought,” she said. “ECC was the first program I had found in 15 years that worked with my schedule, accepted the classes I had already taken and allowed for clinical rotations on the weekends.”

She enrolled in the LPN to RN Bridge Program in Rolla. The program is designed to provide students who already have an LPN license the educational flexibility to complete registered nursing classes in a way that meets their needs.

“The evening and every-other-weekend format allows LPN’s to still work while taking courses,” said Nancy Mitchell, dean of health sciences. “The program also uses distance-learning technology to enhance access and flexibility.”

“Each and every person in ECC’s nursing program helped me along the way,” she said. “From the program assistants to the advisors to the instructors, they all pointed me in the right direction. They were always available and supportive.“

In December 2018, she received her Associate of Applied Science in Nursing. “The amount of pride that came along with finally fulfilling my dream was amazing,” she said.

Shortly after graduation, the news came – it was time for Torres to move once again. This time to Texas.

“It was sad news,” she admitted. “I had made so many great connections because of East Central College. I will forever be grateful for my education. The nursing faculty and staff are one in a million, and I will always be a proud graduate of the program.”

Torres is continuing her education at the University of Texas – El Paso to achieve her bachelors in nursing.

According to RegisteredNursing.org, East Central College is ranked the fourth-best nursing program in the state. The methodology used for the rankings was based on the NCLEX-RN exam, which is used by all state boards of nursing across the country to help assess a student’s competency and is required for licensure.

The program has even more to be proud of this week. “We recently graduated 17 new registered nurses through the LPN-RN Bridge Program in Rolla,” said Dean of Nursing and Allied Health Nancy Mitchell. “We are happy to announce that pass rates for the licensure exam were 100 percent. It is a huge accomplishment!”

Occupational Therapy Receives Full Accreditation, Other Programs Receive Official Visits

October 5, 2018 | Campus News

East Central College is proud to announce its Occupational Therapy Assistant Program has earned its full accreditation! The program received full approval from the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) this semester and will remain accredited for the next seven years. The program consists of a combination of general education, professional level coursework, classroom and laboratory practice and clinical fieldwork experiences.

Meanwhile, other programs in the Nursing and Allied Health Department are also going through the accreditation process. In September, the Paramedic Technology Program received an on-campus visit from the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).

“The formal report will take a few weeks to process,” said Robyn Walter, Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs, “but the site visitors shared comments during their exit review.  They were highly impressed with the quality of the program, student outcomes and community reputation.”

Students in the program receive instruction in the recognition, treatment, and transport of patients with medical emergencies and trauma.

The team from CoAEMSP will soon make accreditation recommendations to the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs (CAAHEP). The process is a five-year cycle. The program was last accredited in 2015, which is good through February 2020.

The Nursing Program also recently received an approval visit. In early October, members of the Missouri State Board of Nursing (MSBN) came to campus.

Vice President Walter believes the continued success of the program should lead to full accreditation.

“They were very impressed with our well-developed curriculum, excellent use of evidence to inform the systematic evaluation of the program and students and strong student-centered approach,” she explained. “We expect the MSBN to make a recommendation for a full five-year approval.”

Walter also added the program NCLEX RN exam pass rates are higher than the national average.
