Upcoming Classes

Outdoor Photography and Basic Editing – SEATS JUST OPENED

Students will learn techniques for doing basic outdoor digital photography. A portion of the class will be hands-on photography along with some very basic editing done on photos taken that day. It will be best if the student has a hand-held camera that has a removable SD memory card. There will be outdoor activity, weather permitting, students will visit tall grass prairie plots on ECC campus to photograph landscapes, flowers, grasses, and insects. The class will happen rain or shine, unless it is pouring rain, a light jacket or poncho might be needed. Shoes may get muddy or wet. Ages 11-16.

Students must bring a SD card – no other format – and it must be blank. Students should wear long pants and appropriate shoes for walking in tall grass (no open-toed shoes, sandals or flip-flops).  Insect repellent is a must and students should bring their own, especially if they are sensitive to it.

Register at least one week prior to the start of class to avoid class cancellations. Class size is limited.

A Microscope World

This class may be taken after “The Things You Cannot See” or by students who have experience using microscopes. You will learn about microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, and other) and have a chance to use scientific equipment, including making your own slides and looking at them under the microscope. In this class, you will get a chance to see a number of very tiny things that are all around us every day, but are too small to see without a microscope. Once thousands of them get together, we can see them with the naked eye.  Ages 10 – 14.

*Students must wear fully-enclosed shoes (NO sandals or clogs).

Register at least one week prior to the start of class to help avoid class cancellations. Class size is limited.

Mammals of Missouri

Explore the diversity of mammals in our state. Observe hands-on items such as mammal furs, skulls, and tracks to learn about different types of mammals in our state. Recognize some mammals by sound or smell alone. Answer questions such as: “Who sleeps during the day?”, “Does a flying squirrel fly?”, and “What does it meant to ‘know your species by their feces’?” Come “warm up” to our fellow furry Missouri residents by learning more about what they need to survive and flourish. Participants will make a plaster cast from their favorite Missouri animal track. Ages 10-18.
