Junior Welding 1

Have you heard about welding? Are you interested in the endless possibilities that you can do with it? Here’s your chance to learn about welding and obtain these hands-on welding skills. You will be observing demonstrations, learning safety and welding in a state of the art welding lab, with the ECC Welding instructor. (Ages 13-18)

Make Your Own Zine

A “zine” is a small homemade magazine that features original writing and collages to express specific interests and explore subjects.

Students will learn about the history of zines in culture and produce their own; they’ll be able to write, interview one another, and design their own handmade publications, which will then be photocopied for them to distribute as they wish. Taught by an ECC English and Media Studies professor. (Ages 13 – 18)

Who Is My Family 1

This class will begin with the discussion and establishment of student personal goals, with regards to family history and how it plays a part in the past. Students will create a flow path to get started from information they currently know about their family. They will be able to explore and learn to use popular genealogy websites and books. (Ages 14-18)

Fiber Crafts

The students will design and decorate a variety of fashion articles and accessories using painting, weaving, and other techniques. They will study fiber art traditions, 2-D design fundamentals, use of color and material, and other decorative media. This class will be fun and enriching for ages 9-18.

Students will need to bring a t-shirt to paint. Preferably a light, plain, solid color, white is best.

Meet Weston Little Hoof- Mini Horse 1

Students will have a first hand experience with a miniature horse and the care that is required. They will be up-close and in-person with a gentle mini-horse. Students may be able to lift his feet, brush him and learn about horses. Parents are required to stay with the students. (Ages 5-8)

Please do not bring children who are not registered for this class. This includes siblings of children enrolled in the class.

Dance the Tail: Chocolat Camp

Join Ballet 314’s professional ballet dancer and a student leader from Devine Performing Arts as they lead “campers” in activities, dance choreography, and reading – bringing the pages of the bilingual Spanish/English story of “Chocolat and The Master (of my Heart)” by Doris E. Lugo Ramírez to life through dance!

On the last day of the series, campers will present the choreography that they have learned in a dance performance for their grown ups to a traditional Puerto Rican Bomba composed especially for our ballet “Chocolat” by Rafaél Hernandez Baez. (Ages 5-8)

Students should come in athletic wear and shoes that are easy to dance in! (Sneakers preferred).

Introduction to Flatwater Kayaking
Join us for an afternoon on the water for a basic kayaking program at Towell Lake located within Little Prairie Conservation Area northeast of Rolla. Participants will learn information and safety about kayaking during the ground school portion of the class, then take to the water for paddling instruction and practice. Ages 13-18.

Kayaks, paddles, and life-jackets will be provided. Closed-toe shoes are required (NOT flip flops or crocs).

Cheerleading

Cheer camp is designed for boys and girls ages 6-10 to learn a few basics. The class will cover motions, jumps, tumbling, and stunting. Participants will learn a new cheer each day that they can perform for family members. Safety for tumbling and stunting will also be taught as well as technique on jumps and motions! (Ages 6-10)

Industrial Engineering Robotics 

Learn how to program small industrial robots to perform tasks. Your robot will be able to pick up parts, sort them and place them based on how you write your program. This class is ideal for students who have progressed past Lego Robotics and wish to program industrial robots. No prior programming is necessary. (Ages 13 – 18)

Basic Archery 1
Are you a youth who has never shot a bow and arrow before and you’re not sure how to get started? Learn the basics of shooting the bow and arrow utilizing some of the techniques and methods that have been adopted by the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP). This program will teach the fundamentals of archery including equipment, safety, stance, and shooting techniques. This course is for youth 10 years of age or older, with the desire to shoot a bow and arrow, but have little or no experience. Learn archery shooting fundamentals while gaining knowledge about equipment options and choices. Note: All equipment will be provided by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Not recommended for students with shoulder or back injuries. (Ages 10-18)

Kaleidoscope Builders: WEDO Robotics 1

This summer course is designed to teach beginning robotics students how to experiment with the application of simple machines in a robotic environment. Each student will be assigned his/her own WEDO LEGO robot to use. Participants will learn the core concepts of robot design and WEDO programming. This program is designed for the students who love to tinker and build things that move. Our goal is to make science, technology, engineering and mathematics irresistibly FUN. Welcome to an exciting journey into the world of CNC machining, specially designed for young enthusiasts! In this engaging class, children will discover the fascinating realm of computer-controlled manufacturing with the guidance of Titans of CNC tutorials and East Central instructors. Through interactive and hands-on activities, budding engineers and creators will explore the fundamentals of CNC machining in a fun and accessible way. From understanding the basics of computer programming to witnessing the transformation of raw materials into custom-designed creations, kids will be inspired to unleash their creativity and problem-solving skills. 

This class offers a unique opportunity for young minds to dive into the world of advanced manufacturing, sparking curiosity and igniting a passion for innovation. Join us and empower the next generation of Machinist and Engineers to shape the future with creativity, imagination, and the power of CNC machining. Through playful experimentation and guided exploration, students will get to design their own part and witness them come to life through CNC machining! (Ages 9 -13)

Please send a lunch with your child as there is no planned lunch time during the class, but they will be allowed to take a break to eat. Food will not be provided.

Students are invited to a plant tour at GH Tool and Mold at 4:30 pm in Washington after the class. ECC will not provide transportation AND parents are encouraged to attend the tour.

Students should wear jeans, closed toe shoes, and no loose clothing or jewelry. Long hair should be pulled back. Students should bring a quick lunch as no lunch will be provided.

Outdoor Photography and Basic Editing 1

Students will learn techniques for doing basic outdoor digital photography. A portion of the class will be hands-on photography along with some very basic editing done on photos taken that day. It will be best if the student has a hand-held camera that has a removable SD memory card. There will be outdoor activity, weather permitting, students will visit tall grass prairie plots on ECC campus to photograph landscapes, flowers, grasses, and insects. The class will happen rain or shine, unless it is pouring rain, a light jacket or poncho might be needed. Shoes may get muddy or wet. (Ages 11-16)

Students must bring a camera with a removeable SD card – no other format – and it must be blank. Students should wear long pants and appropriate shoes for walking in tall grass (no open-toed shoes, sandals or flip-flops).  Insect repellent is a must and students should bring their own, especially if they are sensitive to it.

Mammals of Missouri 1

Explore the diversity of mammals in our state. Observe hands-on items such as mammal furs, skulls, and tracks to learn about different types of mammals in our state. Come “warm up” to our fellow furry Missouri residents by learning more about what they need to survive and flourish. Participants will make plaster cast from their favorite Missouri animal track. (Ages 10-18)

A Microscope World

Did you know that you are made of cells? In this class, you will get a chance to see plant cells, tiny things that live in a pond, and your own cells. Students will learn to use microscopes, learn about microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, and other) and have a chance to use scientific equipment, including making your own slides and looking at them under the microscope. Students must wear fully-enclosed shoes (no sandals or clogs) and pants that cover their whole leg (no crop pants or shorts).  (Ages 8 – 14)

Teen Deputy Summer Academy

Are you interested in learning more about a career in law enforcement? Join the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department in a week long program to explore the skills necessary to become a deputy sheriff and what you can expect to learn in a law enforcement training program. Topics covered include constitutional law, traffic regulations, ethics, SWAT, K9 and so much more! Ages 14-18 (high school).

ElectroMagnetic Miners

Supercharge your summer experience with a little E&M! Learn how small electrical devices work together to do some pretty cool stuff like control a traffic light, ring a doorbell, and power an engine. Students will design, build, test, and solder an electrical circuit that can be used in a practical application. On the second day, teams of students will compete to build the most accurate magnetic launcher using some of the world’s strongest magnets! These make and take activities will provide an exciting, hands-on experience in electricity and magnetism as well as an inside look into the electrifying opportunities available at Missouri S&T. The Tiny World Around and Inside You

In this class, you will get a chance to see your own cells, grow and look at bacteria from your mouth and hands, and see if we can find bacteria on surfaces in the building. Outdoor Photography and Basic Editing 2

Students will learn techniques for doing basic outdoor digital photography. A portion of the class will be hands-on photography along with some very basic editing done on photos taken that day. It will be best if the student has a hand-held camera that has a removable SD memory card. There will be outdoor activity, weather permitting, students will visit tall grass prairie plots on ECC campus to photograph landscapes, flowers, grasses, and insects. The class will happen rain or shine, unless it is pouring rain, a light jacket or poncho might be needed. Shoes may get muddy or wet. (Ages 11-16)

Students must bring a camera with a removeable SD card – no other format – and it must be blank. Students should wear long pants and appropriate shoes for walking in tall grass (no open-toed shoes, sandals or flip-flops).  Insect repellent is a must and students should bring their own, especially if they are sensitive to it.

Juggling for Beginners 1

Students will learn the basics of juggling. It’s good for improving concentration and relieving stress as well as being easier than you think. You will learn the basic throw, scoop and throw-catch in order to juggle 3 balls/beanbags. (Ages 12-18)

Newborn/Pediatric Nursing: How to Care for Baby 1

Do you have a child that is interested in the field of newborn/pediatric nursing? A child that is expecting a new sibling? Do you have a child that loves babies? Then this would be a great class for them!  We have a limited number of babies for classroom use, so your child is invited to bring their favorite “baby” doll to class to practice with. (Ages 8-10)

Students will learn about newborn care from a Pediatric Nurse and one of East Central College’s own Nursing Instructors! In this class, we will discuss topics that pertain to normal newborn care. Some of the topics that will be discussed include:

  • Giving baby a checkup
  • Changing diapers
  • Swaddling
  • How to hold baby properly
  • Breastfeeding and bottle feeding
  • Bathing newborns

This class will teach the fundamentals of theatre to children ages 8-12 years old. They will learn concepts such as projection, audition skills, improvisation, memorization, performing in front of peers, diction, confidence, teamwork, characterization, and so much more. We will spend class time learning these foundational concepts concurrent with rehearsals for the show in which this class will culminate. Students will benefit from this class through not only all of the skills they will obtain in relation to theatre, but also, real life interactions, empathy, and collaboration. (Ages 8 – 12)

Students will learn about the chosen artist of the day. Examples of the artist’s work will be observed and discussed. Students will complete an assignment in the artist’s style. In this hands-on workshop, students will participate in multiple sensory activities that will enable them to brainstorm creative story ideas. Each session will focus on a different sense using pictures, objects, fragrances, sound effects, textures, and our own vivid imaginations. (No food will be consumed due to allergy concerns). Several activities will be followed by an in-class writing session. Students will share with each other and help each other deepen or develop their ideas. After taking this workshop, attendees will know how to glean writing prompts from their surroundings and how to generate their own unique ideas for future projects such as poems, stories, journaling, blogging, etc. Required materials: paper & a writing utensil. (Ages 10-13)

Our students work with the LEGO® Mindstorms base kit to master the programming of basic movements, and then progress to more difficult challenges. Our goal is to make science, technology, engineering and mathematics irresistibly FUN. (Ages 9-12)

The students will make 3 – 5 handcrafted holiday ornaments that can be made at home later too. Students will do hand sewing, ironing, paper cutting, scoring, painting and gluing.
