ECC Nursing Students Hold Clinical Orientation Day

October 17, 2022 | Campus News

For the first-year East Central College nursing students, last week’s Clinical Orientation Day was a major step in their journey into the health care field.

The students were in full uniform Tuesday, Oct. 11, to start clinicals — a vital, hands-on portion of the nursing program curriculum.

This is the first semester in the ECC Nursing program for these students, who were photographed during their Fundamentals of Nursing course.

The classroom and clinical components of the curriculum are interrelated to provide a strong background for students to become safe and competent practitioners.

ECC offers two programs leading to an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing, which prepare students to become registered nurses.

Rolla Nursing Student Receives Scholarship

February 22, 2022 | Campus News ECC Rolla

East Central College nursing student Tela Connors is the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship from the Missouri League for Nursing (MLN).

Connors, of Salem, is studying to be a Registered Nurse and is slated to graduate in May.

She will be recognized at the ninth annual Student Nursing Convention April 6-7 in Osage Beach. The scholarship can be used for tuition, books and supplies.

ECC nursing program instructor Joannie Blakely was Connors’ clinical and course instructor last year. She said Connors received an “exemplary performance award” for her clinical performance.

“She is a true advocate for her patient’s and provides quality safe patient care,” Blakely said. “She will be a great asset to the healthcare system.”

According to Julie Chirban, also an instructor in the college’s nursing program, Connors’ personality and work ethic is very well suited for a nursing career.

“Tela is a confident student with years of health care experience that has enhanced her ability to perform at a high level,” Chirban said.

“She is kind to patients as well as to her co-students. She has gone out of her way to help fellow students during this program, and she is a pleasure to have in class and clinicals,” she added.

“Tela will be a wonderful addition to the nursing profession.”

MLN is a not-for-profit organization established in 1953 to support the delivery of quality health care by nurses and other health care providers through education, collaboration and information.

It is the leading organization for promoting excellent health care through programs designed to meet members and health care professional’s continuing educational needs.

MLN is committed to collaboration and networking with other professional organizations and coalitions across the state.  It is one of the top constituent leagues in the nation.

Bieker Recognized for 26 Years of Outstanding Service to ECC

November 23, 2021 | Campus News

East Central College faculty member Judy Bieker recently was recognized for more than 26 years of outstanding service.

Bieker, nursing program coordinator and associate professor, received the Missouri Community College Association (MCCA) Senior Service Award for longevity and distinguished service to the College and program.

According to Bieker’s peers who nominated her, she has educated more than 500 nursing students in her career.

“Judy’s teaching style is engaging. Before the ‘flipped classroom’ was a buzz word, she was already utilizing this active learning strategy in her obstetrics and cardiology classes,” her nomination reads.

“Over the course of her tenure, Judy has the privilege to teach both theory and the clinical didactic. This combination has led to the success of the ECC nursing program and the success of our students.”

During her time at ECC, Bieker has participated on various committees. Most recently she led the team responsible for overhauling the faculty evaluations and improving the College’s portfolio process. The portfolio of a faculty member is a collection of information about a teacher’s practice, which includes lesson plans, student assignments and formal evaluations by supervisors.

Bieker has also mentored numerous master’s degree-seeking students and new faculty members over the years without hesitation.

“Judy mentors new faculty and assists them in their professional development through their first five years of teaching through her dedicated work on the portfolio committee,” her colleagues said. “She values teaching and learning and has great interest in assisting newer faculty.”

Bieker is a role model to students and others through her spirit of inquiry and educational excellence.

“She never turns down a challenge and approaches her dedication to students and to the college with great vigor,” the nomination reads. “Judy is extremely deserving of this award as she embodies the true spirit of nursing, nursing education, and the community college mission.”

Deadline to Apply for Nursing Program Approaches

September 14, 2021 | Campus News

There is a little over two months until the deadline to apply for East Central College’s Nursing program, a highly competitive program with a limited number of seats.

Applications for the program are due Dec. 1 for classes that begin in August 2022. Students in the Fall 2022 cohort would graduate in May 2024.

The ECC Nursing Program is available in both Union and Rolla. To find out if you are ready, please make an appointment with an advisor today.

For more information, visit the nursing program website at www.eastcentral.edu/allied-health/nursing/.

The nursing program prepares graduates to pass the NCLEX-RN, with the goal of readying the grads to be registered nurses in diverse health care settings.

Last year, NursingProcess.org ranked ECC’s nursing program No. 4 in the Midwest among 660 nursing schools offering associate’s degrees.

The colleges were evaluated nursing schools throughout the region on four factors — national test pass rates, academic quality, the nursing school’s reputation and affordability.

ECC offers two programs leading to an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Nursing. This program prepares students to become registered nurses.

The main campus in Union, as well as the Rolla site, offer a complete pre-licensure program (generic) for those interested in becoming a registered nurse. A Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) to RN Bridge program is also available at the Rolla location for LPNs interested in becoming registered nurses.

The classroom and clinical components of the curriculum are interrelated to provide a strong background of the student in attaining the objectives of the program and in becoming a safe and competent practitioner.

ECC Receives Historic $5 Million Donation

August 25, 2021 | Campus News

East Central College—through the East Central College Foundation — has received the largest donation in its history – $5 million to be used for nursing scholarships and the campus food pantry.

“Lives will be changed and lives will be saved because of this incredible gift,” said Dr. Jon Bauer, college president. “Students are being afforded the opportunity to pursue their dream of becoming a nurse. I can think of no better way to see the exponential impact of this gift.

“Because every student who becomes a nurse will go on to make a tremendous impact in the lives of countless patients. And for students who need the most basic assistance, the food pantry will be well-positioned to provide that help when it’s most needed.”

The donation is from a couple, asking to remain anonymous, who has been funding a memorial scholarship for nursing students since 2018, according to Bridgette Kelch, Foundation executive director.

Previously, the couple established a charitable remainder trust (CRT) with the Foundation which pays them a specific percentage annually for the rest of their lives. That trust today is valued at $1.5 million.

A CRT is a gift of cash or other property to an irrevocable trust. The donor receives an income stream from the trust and the charity receives the remaining trust assets at the end of the trust term.

Another option for those who itemize their deductions is the charitable contribution limitation, which has been extended for 2021. The limitation for cash contributions, formerly set at 60 percent, has now been raised to 100 percent of an individual’s adjusted gross income (AGI).

The couple encourages others to explore either or both options with their financial advisors.

“These types of gifts are a win-win for both the donor and the nonprofit,” said Kelch.

“We are shocked and so unbelievably grateful about what this gift will mean for our students now and in the immediate future,” Kelch said. “To receive this record-breaking gift during a pandemic speaks volumes of the donors and their commitment to education.

The scholarships are for students with financial need enrolled in the nursing program, giving many students much-needed financial relief during the COVID-19 pandemic, Kelch commented.

Although the donor wishes to remain anonymous, Bauer said it is important for college stakeholders to know about the gift.

“This historic moment starts with compassion and generosity,” Bauer said. “We know it is very important to the donor that resources are used to improve the world around us. Moreover, this gift speaks to the quality of the work that goes on at East Central. I am grateful for this gift and for the trust that has been placed in us.”

Kelch echoed that sentiment.

“Every dollar committed to the ECC Foundation helps strengthen our communities and enhances the lives of students forever,” she said.

Kelch added that every student can benefit from the campus food pantry if they are in need.

ECC maintains the student food pantry to help students throughout the year who might need some occasional help with food needs during any given week. Multiple campus student clubs, faculty and staff donate regularly to the pantry to help keep it stocked.

“This donation gives a substantial financial boost to our pantry which ensures any student in need will not go hungry,” Kelch said.

East Central College is a comprehensive community college based in Union, MO. The institution serves students throughout east-central Missouri.

The ECC Foundation is a 501c3 and was established to support the growth and development of ECC. It solicits and receives tax-deductible gifts which are managed solely for the benefit of the college and its students.

The scholarship has been life-changing for many nursing students and graduates, including Summer Thorp-Lancaster and Kaitlyn Johnson.

Summer Thorp-Lancaster

Thorp-Lancaster graduated from ECC in May 2021. She attended nursing classes at ECC in Rolla for two years and received scholarship funds both years. She is working at Phelps Health in Rolla in a “float pool” so she gets experience in many areas.

“I don’t think I can ever adequately convey my gratitude for the generous gift that supported my first endeavor into college,” Thorp-Lancaster said.

She also said the scholarship funds limited the sacrifices she and her family had to make and allowed her to earn a degree without the burden of student loan debt.

“Before deciding to go to school, my whole family sat down and discussed the various sacrifices we would all need to make in order for this to work,” Thorp-Lancaster said. “The scholarship meant that some of those sacrifices weren’t needed after all.”

Kaitlyn Johnson

The nursing scholarship has been life-changing for Johnson, who is studying to be a registered nurse.

She is employed as a licensed practical nurse on the medical surgical floor at Mercy Hospital Washington.  She is set to graduate from ECC this December and she’d like to move to the labor and delivery floor at Mercy.

Johnson, 28, graduated from St. Clair High School in 2011. She received scholarship funds last year and this year while enrolled in ECC’s LPN to RN bridge program.

“The funds helped relieve financial stress on me and my family,” she said. “I didn’t have to pick up extra shifts to make ends meet or worry about my student loans piling up.”

That means she can spend more time with her three-year-old son, Nolan, who is her inspiration to succeed as a student and as a nurse.

“He is the reason to keep striving for my dreams and I am able to spend my extra time studying or spending precious time with my son,” Johnson said.

James Johnson

James Johnson is a nursing student who has returned to school after being the workforce as a chef and graphic designer. He received a scholarship from the donor last year and this year.

“It has helped me greatly. I had planned to pay for school with the help of my wife but COVID impacted us financially,” he said. “Because of the scholarship, I was able to focus all of my attention on school and I worked minimal hours as a lab assistant in the science department.”

Johnson added that he intends to work in St. Louis at an emergency department after graduating from ECC and then continue his education.

“Once I gain a few years’ experience I would like to work as a travel nurse,” he said. “Eventually I will probably seek a master’s in nursing informatics, but that may still change.”

Nursing Alum Recognized as Practitioner of the Year

July 2, 2021 | Campus News

East Central College Nursing Program alumna and nurse practitioner Jennifer Raffaelli recently was recognized by the resident doctors at Barnes-Jewish Hospital for her knowledge and the assistance she provides them.

Raffaelli, a 2010 ECC Nursing Program graduate, is a trauma surgery nurse practitioner with Washington University at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. In June, she received the Advanced Care Practitioner of the Year for 2020-21.

She was nominated for the award by a resident physician. Then the residents, interns, chief residents and fellows voted for the nominee who is most helpful to them when they need assistance.

This is the second consecutive year that Raffaelli was nominated for the Advanced Care Practitioner Award, and the first time she won.

“It is such an honor to even be nominated,” she said. “I appreciate that the residents recognize what I do to make their life easier — I am very gracious that they picked me. It is a huge honor.”

The award is presented to the surgical care practitioner who shows “great accomplishment to the education and training of the surgery residents.”

Nursing Career

In 2008, Raffaelli, who had a business degree, was considering a career change. She enrolled in the ECC Nursing program and graduated in May 2010.

She said ECC had a very positive impact on her education and her career trajectory.

“I loved the ECC nursing program,” Raffaelli said. “The instructors were all amazing.

“It was such a supportive and positive environment not only with my classmates but with all the nursing faculty and administrators,” she added. “If I had to do nursing school all over again, I’d absolutely go right back to ECC. No hesitation.”

Raffaelli, who is originally from St. Louis, worked at St. Anthony’s Hospital, now Mercy Hospital South, after graduating from ECC.

She later obtained a degree to become a board-certified nurse practitioner from Maryville University.

Raffaelli began working at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in 2018. She is married with two children.

Nursing Graduates Receive Awards

May 25, 2021 | Campus News

East Central College nursing graduates were presented with Student Ambassador and Outstanding Nursing Student awards at the May 15 pinning ceremony for program graduates.

ECC Outstanding Nursing Students

The 2021 East Central College Outstanding Nursing Students are Union graduate Lisa Heimos and Rolla graduate Summer Thorp-Lancaster.

To be considered for the Outstanding Nursing Student award, ECC must have made a difference in the life of the student. For many award recipients, they most likely would not have realized the dream of becoming a nurse had ECC not been in their community.

The award winners must also display success in the classroom and the clinical setting.

Missouri League for Nursing Student Ambassador Award

There were two Missouri League for Nursing Student Ambassador Awards presented to ECC nursing graduates.

To be considered for the award, students must show leadership potential by being active in student organizations or active in organizing activities for the class; exhibit interpersonal skills, by working cooperatively with faculty, other students, and agency staff; and continuing professional growth by showing an interest in learning beyond graduation.

ECC Union nursing graduate Christine West received one of the Missouri League for Nursing Student Ambassador Awards.

A second Missouri League for Nursing Student Ambassador Award was presented to ECC Rolla graduate Shannon Herode.

Outstanding Student Award Presented to Nursing Graduate

May 19, 2021 | Campus News ECC Rolla

East Central College recognized a leader and compassionate nursing graduate with the 2021 Outstanding Student Award.

Rolla nursing program graduate Summer Thorp-Lancaster received this year’s award, which is voted on by ECC employees.

Each year, the Outstanding Student Award winner is presented with a plaque at graduation and given a $100 award. Thorp-Lancaster was recognized May 15 during a commencement ceremony held in the Donald Shook Student Center.

To be considered for the honor, an ECC student must have maintained a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. In addition to academic achievements, participation in campus and community activities is also considered.

Thorp-Lancaster

Thorp-Lancaster is a nursing student with a GPA of 3.66 and she is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. She is a recipient of a Missouri League for Nursing Scholarship and a Phelps Health Scholarship.

She received nine separate nominations for 2021 Outstanding Student Award.

ECC Rolla nursing instructor Courtney Brandt MSN, RN, said Thorp-Lancaster is a leader among her peers. She served as the student nurse organization president during the last academic year.

“In this role she has organized fundraisers and service projects,” said Brandt. “She is the go-to when you need a volunteer, she organizes class events and is always supportive of her classmates.”

“Summer excels in the classroom. She is inquisitive and excited to learn new information,” she added.

“Her priority is to make sure she is well prepared to be a successful nurse. In the clinical setting she has demonstrated that she will be a skilled, knowledgeable and compassionate nurse. She quickly builds relationships with her patients and is a great patient advocate.”

Another of Thorp-Lancaster’s instructors, Julie Chirban, MSN, RN, agreed that the award recipient is kind, compassionate and helpful to other students.

“She will go out of her way to help a fellow student with coming early or staying late after class to go over things,” Chirban said.

Before attending ECC, Thorp-Lancaster started a local nonprofit called WomanSpace that provided space for small-business events, as well as meeting space and a sense of community.  She is highly respected among friends who practice and seek alternative health care and natural food options, and she worked as a doula for several years.

Thorp-Lancaster has volunteered for several limited-time opportunities in her Phi Theta Kappa chapter, including filming a promotional video targeting nontraditional students and why ECC is the right fit for those students.

She served a short term as the Rolla PTK public relations secretary during the end of 2020 Spring semester before classes went all online. Thorp-Lancaster has been available on short notice multiple times to read parts of an induction ceremony, run to the store for supplies and other small but vital tasks that keep the PTK chapter functioning.

She also was awarded the Outstanding Student in Human Anatomy & Physiology at the Rolla Student Awards ceremony in 2019.

Jennifer Harrell

The 2020 Outstanding Student Award was presented to graduate Jennifer Harrell on May 15.

Harrell, who is now attending classes at Missouri S&T, Rolla, was recognized by ECC President Dr. Jon Bauer and the college in June 2020, however, there was not a graduation ceremony where she could be officially honored.

Harrell was the PTK vice president of public relations in 2019-20 and she served as an ECC Student Ambassador from March 2019 to May 2020.

In April 2020, Harrell was named a winner of the 2020 Scott Wright Student Essay Contest from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD).
