Law Enforcement
This course introduces students to the law enforcement profession. Topics in interpersonal perspectives including ethics, professionalism, and human behavior are covered. Students will explore tactical communications, communication obstacles, cultural diversity, dealing with aggressive behavior, and dealing with death. Additional focus will be placed on the importance of a peace officer's personal health and wellness including stress management, fitness, and nutrition. Students will also complete training in homeland security topics including terrorism/weapons of mass destruction awareness, introduction to incident command systems, and national incident management system training.
This course covers the responsibilities, technical studies, and procedures involved with patrol including radio communication, processing and documenting, field interviews, basic security principles, person and vehicle stops and searches, emergency response and building searches, organized crime, civil disturbance response, survival mentality, and hazardous materials. In addition, students will learn proper report writing, interviewing skills, and criminal history reporting.
This course introduces the fundamental concepts of constitutional law for students pursuing a career in law enforcement. Topics covered include an introduction to legal blocks and criminal process, rules of evidence, admissions, confessions, and Miranda rights, arrest procedures, search and seizures, prisoner rights and privileges, and peace officer liability.
This course covers practical applications of Missouri Criminal Statutes. Juvenile justice procedures will also be introduced. Topics discussed include the Missouri Criminal Code, general provisions, justification and use of force, and the difference between criminal and civil matters.
This course is designed to introduce the fundamentals of traffic control and accident investigation. Topics covered include uniform citation, registration, licensing, and insurance, traffic and vehicle regulations, accident report writing and diagramming, accident investigation, traffic radar introduction, DWI investigation and reporting, and traffic control.
This course is designed to educate and reinforce the need for peace officers to be in good physical condition. Basic physical fitness concepts with emphasis on endurance, strength, and flexibility are presented. An initial assessment will be conducted for each student to design an individualized plan to improve physical agility.
This course will introduce concepts of defensive tactics and use of force techniques for students pursuing a career in law enforcement. Additional topics include handcuffing and restraint devices, control techniques, active defense measures, weapon retention and disarming, ground fighting techniques, and mechanics of arrest and control. Students will apply knowledge gained in use of force application scenarios.
In this course, students will develop firearm skills and emergency driving techniques under the supervision of law enforcement professionals.
This course introduces students to criminal investigations in law enforcement. Topics covered include an introduction to basic investigation, the interrogation process, informant use, crime scene procedures, physical evidence preservation, and case and trial preparation. Investigation of property crimes, theft, burglary, assault, robbery, death, and bad checks will be also discussed.
This course will continue the application of previously learned basic physical fitness concepts with emphasis on endurance, strength, and flexibility. An initial assessment will be conducted, so that the student can design an individualized plan to improve physical agility.
This course continues to instruct students on criminal investigations in law enforcement. Investigation topics covered include an introduction to drug identification, sexual offenses, auto theft, criminal intelligence, arson and explosives, and federal firearm regulation. Students will also be provided with practical knowledge of domestic violence crisis intervention and child abuse and neglect cases.
The course will provide students with the necessary knowledge to obtain an initial patient assessment prior to the arrival of a licensed emergency medical technician and/or paramedic. Instruction will include lecture, demonstration, and practical application of acquired skills.
This course is designed to safely apply previously learned theoretical concepts, classroom demonstrations, and basic law enforcement skills acquired in a realistic simulated role-play environment of actual law enforcement situations. Students will integrate concepts from previous coursework and report writing skills to serve as both the responding and assisting law enforcement officer.
