How to Be an  Entrepreneur 1

This class will teach you how to take an idea and turn it into a profitable business that any young adult could do.  Students will create a business to sell items at the college.  This will include how to market and finance the business, produce the products and selling the product.  The last part of the class will look at what students have learned and how they can take their ideas and put them into a business plan. Ages 5-9.

Introduction to Kayaking
Join us for an afternoon on the water for a basic kayaking program at Towell Lake located within Little Prairie Conservation Area northeast of Rolla. Participants will learn information and safety about kayaking during the ground school portion of the class, then take to the water for paddling instruction and practice. Ages 13-18.

Learn the basics of shooting the bow and arrow utilizing some of the techniques and methods that have been adopted by the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP). This program will teach the fundamentals of archery including equipment, safety, stance, and shooting techniques. This course is for youth 10 years of age or older, with the desire to shoot a bow and arrow, but have little or no experience. Learn archery shooting fundamentals while gaining knowledge about equipment options and choices. Note: All equipment will be provided by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Not recommended for students with shoulder or back injuries. (Ages 10-18)

Newborn/Pediatric Nursing: How to Care for Baby 3

Do you have a child that is interested in the field of newborn/pediatric Nursing? A child that is expecting a new sibling? Do you have a child that loves babies? Then this would be a great class for them! (Ages 5-8)

Students will learn about newborn care from a Pediatric Nurse and one of East Central College’s own Nursing Instructors! In this class, we will discuss topics that pertain to normal newborn care. Some of the topics that will be discussed include:

STEM Academy Teaching

Do you want to learn more about science? Do you want to learn how to teach science? What do you think is interesting? How can you get other students interested in it too? You will meet for three days to talk about science and teaching, and plan science activities for younger students to do the following week. Edible experiments are popular. During the second week, gain the experience of teaching what you have recently learned. Students should plan to attend all sessions. Ages 13-18.

Mammals of Missouri 1

Explore the diversity of mammals in our state. Observe hands-on items such as mammal furs, skulls, and tracks to learn about different types of mammals in our state. Recognize some mammals by sound or smell alone. Answer questions such as: “Who sleeps during the day?”, “Does a flying squirrel fly?”, and “What does it meant to ‘know your species by their feces’?” Come “warm up” to our fellow furry Missouri residents by learning more about what they need to survive and flourish. Participants will make a plaster cast from their favorite Missouri animal track. Ages 10-18.

The Things You Cannot See 

Did you know that you are made of cells? In this class, you will get a chance to see your own cells, identify microorganisms in pond water, and look at bacteria under a microscope. Students will learn to use microscopes, learn about microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, and other) and have a chance to use scientific equipment, including making your own microscope slides. Ages 8 – 14.

Teen Deputy Summer Academy

Are you interested in learning more about a career in law enforcement? Join the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department in a weeklong program to explore the skills necessary to become a deputy sheriff and what you can expect to learn in a law enforcement training program. Topics covered include constitutional law, traffic regulations, ethics, SWAT, K9 and so much more! Ages 14-18 (high school).

After you register for the class, you will be sent an application. All applications must be completed and returned by July 1, 2024. Submit the application to LETC@eastcentral.edu or in person at East Central College, 2303 North Bishop, Rolla, MO 65401.

Experience Earth’s Surface 1

Children will learn about watersheds and maps using an interactive augmented reality sandbox. Kids will be able to play with the sand by pushing it around and make observations as a map is projected onto it. They will get to learn about how water interacts with the land and make connections from what they see happening in the sandbox to what they see happening in the environmnet around them. (Ages 5-8)
