ECC Rolla Tutoring Services Lead to Student Success

March 10, 2022 | Campus News ECC Rolla

Tutoring services at East Central College in Rolla are easy to sign up for, offered for a variety of subjects, and really help students succeed.

That’s according to Chrizma Boswell, a first-year student at ECC, who has used the tutoring service.

“The process to sign up was super easy. I knew about tutoring through the weekly emails we get, and the information is on Canvas,” Boswell said. “I just called and made an appointment.”

Boswell, of Newburg, explained that she was failing an online history class. It was her first semester of college and she didn’t know how to study or take tests for online classes. After attending tutoring sessions with tutor Kirby Moreland, however, she was able to turn her grade completely around.

“I went from failing history to getting an A in the class and it was my highest percent grade,” she said. “Kirby was really nice and friendly and helped me so much.”

Boswell mentioned that Moreland often in the library and she can just go in and ask for assistance.

Moreland said Boswell is a bright student, she just needed to learn how best to study.

“Helping students figure out how to find the information they need is sometimes more helpful than giving them the actual information,” said Moreland.

“My favorite part about tutoring is that moment when I can see the understanding sink in for a student — a few sessions in, I got to see this in Chrizma,” he added. “I made study suggestions and she actually used them which ended up helping her a great deal.”

Boswell wants other students to take advantage of the excellent tutoring services on campus.

“I 100 percent recommend tutoring to other ECC students. I don’t just get tutoring because I’m not doing well in a class, but also for classes that I’m doing okay in but just want a boost in my grade,” Boswell commented.

“I feel like people are afraid to get tutoring because they feel embarrassed, but it is so helpful,” she noted. “You have a teacher who is going to teach you the same way all year round, and then you have a tutor who can show you a way to better understand it.”

To inquire about tutoring services at ECC-Rolla, visit ECC Rolla Student Success Center & Tutoring, call 573-466-4080 or email rolla.tutors@eastcentral.edu.

Students ca receive one hour of tutoring per day in Math, Biology, Microbiology and/or Chemistry. Tutoring options include:

  • In-Person,
  • Rolla Tutor Chat,
  • Zoom or phone sessions, and
  • Group study sessions.

Homeschool Day is March 25 at ECC in Union and Rolla

March 10, 2022 | Campus News ECC Rolla

East Central College is inviting homeschooled students to the Union and Rolla locations to let them know what the college has to offer, including dual enrollment opportunities.

Megen Strubberg, director of early college and admissions, said there are many avenues for homeschoolers to earn college credit while still taking high school-level classes.

“ECC is a great option for homeschool students to get a jump on their college coursework,” she said. “That’s why we are inviting them to campus to talk about the programs we have and show them around.”

Strubberg added that once homeschool students complete their high school studies, there is an easy transition to attend ECC full-time.

ECC Homeschool Day is Friday, March 25, in Union and Rolla. The locations and times are:

  • Union, Health & Science Building, Room 100, 2-4 p.m.
  • Rolla, Rolla Technical Center, Room 121, 9-11 a.m.

To RSVP for the event, people may email admissions@eastcentral.edu.

For more information or with questions, call ECC in Union at 636-584-6588, or ECC in Rolla at 573-466-4100.

Strubberg added that students do not need to bring anything with them that day, and they will be given information on how to start their college journey at ECC.

Dual Enrollment

Strubberg explained that many in the community may not be aware that they can take college-level courses before completing their high school studies, and through ECC, students can explore more rigorous coursework while doing so.

“Homeschool students work right alongside adult students and other dual enrollment high school students,” she further explained. “Students interested in STEM-related (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields sometimes crave the increased rigor of upper-level math and science course content — it helps to be a part of a community of students going through that same experience.”

Parents of current and former students enrolled in ECC courses commented on how seamless the enrollment process is, and the benefits of dual enrollment.

Parent Testimonies

Jennifer Schneider, the mother of two ECC graduates who were homeschooled, saw many benefits to her children taking courses at ECC as they took high school-level courses.

“They get challenged and encouraged and it is a huge motivator to allow your student to succeed in a college environment while still at home,” she said.

Schneider, of Washington, said it was simple for her children to enroll in courses and the ECC staff was incredibly helpful navigating them through the process.

“I only wish we would have learned about it sooner,” she said, encouraging other parents to contact ECC.

“If you are considering it, don’t wait,” Schneider said. “If you feel the process is overwhelming, know that Megen (Strubberg) will walk alongside you to help make your child’s transition smooth.”

Jennifer Steinman, Labadie, has two children enrolled in dual enrollment courses at ECC.

“It was an easy transition (to ECC) from a homeschool environment,” she said. “We were used to choosing curriculums and activities that fit our schedules, so it’s great to have the option of online or in-person courses.”

Steinman agreed that the ECC staff has been very supportive, and the testing center enables her to know her children are in the right classes that are appropriate for their level.

“There’s so much academic support from teachers, tutors and counselors to help students succeed, including support with their specific needs,” she said.

“My students can be dual-enrolled with ECC, giving us the flexibility to use the curriculums we choose at home while also having access to courses at ECC that fill in the gaps.”

According to Steinman, when her children were entering high school age, she wanted to be sure they were enrolled in the right classes to challenge and prepare them for college.

“Another homeschool family had told me how well their daughter was doing at ECC and encouraged me to call,” she said. “My first phone call to ECC answered all of my questions.”

Students Praise ECC Apprenticeship Program During National Apprenticeship Week

November 17, 2021 | Campus News ECC Rolla

The students enrolled in the Industrial Maintenance Specialization apprenticeship course at East Central College in Rolla have nothing but great things to say about their experience.

“I’m glad ECC does this. It’s nice having the equipment here to physically work on instead of just listening to someone talk about it,” said student Brandon Iske.

An apprenticeship is on-the-job training with job-related instruction intended to develop new skills and to increase employee wages.

“This apprenticeship program is for those in manufacturing who are looking to progress. Our students learn the skills and knowledge necessary for promotion,” Duane Clonts, Industrial Engineering Technology instructor, explained. “One of my students started as a lineman, and after taking last semester’s classes, he was promoted and is now in maintenance.”

ECC Rolla employees are working with Royal Canin, Rolla, and Cohen Architectural Woodworking, St. James, for this apprenticeship program. There are five students enrolled. The specialization takes two years to complete. These students started in January 2021 and are expected to complete the program in December 2022.

“A lot of what I have learned in this program has helped me in my job and will help me in the future,” accounted student Gerald Pulliam.

The program’s instructor has much to do with his student’s success and high praise of the course.

“Duane is very knowledgeable. You wonder how he can keep all that knowledge in his head. It takes a special type of person to teach this class because you have to be so well rounded and know so much,” explained Pulliam. “Duane is very smart and truly one of a kind. I would recommend him specifically because he is such a good teacher.”

Iske had similar sentiments.

“He’s really good. He’s laid back, yet stern. If we need help, he will help us but won’t just come out and say the answer. He guides us there,” he added.

National Apprenticeship Week, Nov. 15-21, celebrates the programs devoted to people evolving their skills in the workplace through an “earn while you learn” model.

College to Utilize COVID-Relief Funds for Health and Safety Upgrades

June 18, 2021 | Campus News

East Central College Board of Trustees approved the use of federal COVID-relief funds for technology and furniture purchases, heating and ventilation upgrades, and new remote access door systems.

During its June 14 meeting, trustees agreed to utilize federal Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund dollars, allocated as part of the CARES Act, to purchase equipment to mitigate the transmission of viruses, as well as technology upgrades to expand broadband for distance learning.

Much of the CARES Act funded furniture, technology and air-quality upgrades will be in place before the fall semester, according to ECC President Dr. Jon Bauer.

“There is going to be a lot of work going on in the next few months,” he said.

Furniture Purchases

Trustees approved two bids for the purchase of furniture at the Union campus and Rolla sites from Krueger International (KI). The college will purchase furniture for classrooms and student gathering areas in Union at the cost of $313,300.50; and furniture for classrooms at Rolla Main and Rolla North for $81,144.

“This will provide more flexibility to configure classrooms for social distancing, and the finish of the furniture is much easier to clean and sanitize,” Dr. Bauer noted.

Technology

CARES Act funds also will be used to purchase new fiber and network switches for the Health and Science and Donald Shook Student Center buildings.

Trustees approved the bid from Link Data Services, Inc. for installation of fiber at a cost of $41,482.35; and the purchase of 15 Dell switches at the cost of $84,105.

‘This will improve the bandwidth for distance learning and Wi-Fi,” Dr. Bauer said.

HVAC System

The $1,437,620 bid from Johnson Controls for a HVAC project also was approved by trustees.

The scope of work includes a heat pump replacement, new ultraviolet lamps, new duct work and ventilation upgrades, and Variable Air Volume (VAV) box replacement in three buildings on campus.

According to Dr. Bauer, the ultraviolet lamps, bulbs, and components can disinfect airstreams and continuously clean surfaces of cooling units and drain pans for maintaining indoor air quality and comfort performance.

“The developed clean air solutions from Johnson Controls help to decrease the risk of infection and create a safer, healthier environment,” he said.

Access Door Control

Another project funded by COVID-relief funds that was approved by trustees is for access door control and ADA touchless entries. TSI Global Companies, St. Charles, was the low bidder for the project at the cost of $165,805.

The access door control and ADA touchless entry project will be an upgrade over the aging automatic door hardware now in place. The touchless entry will help prevent the spread of viruses, improve security and safety, and be ADA compliance.

In addition, Union campus police officers will have remote access to doors and can quickly lockdown the campus if warranted during emergency situations.

Upgrades to access doors will be installed at the Union and Rolla locations.

Rolla Nursing Student Receives Scholarship

March 4, 2021 | Campus News ECC Rolla

East Central College-Rolla Nursing student, Summer Thorp-Lancaster is the recipient of a $1,000 Missouri League for Nursing (MLN) scholarship.

She will be recognized at the eighth annual MLN Student Nurse Virtual Convention in April.

Laura McDonald, ECC Rolla Nursing Program coordinator, said Thorp-Lancaster, who anticipates graduating in May, is an excellent student.

“She has life experiences that have guided her to where she is today, and she is thoroughly eager and excited to give back and work as a registered nurse,” McDonald said.

She added that Thorp-Lancaster is mature, very intelligent, dedicated to her success and she represents a “symbol of excellence as a student nurse.”

“Her outlook is always to do what is best for the patient with much thought and consideration during patient care,” McDonald commented.

“She will be an awesome patient advocate and I am so excited to see where her future takes her.”

According to McDonald, Thorp-Lancaster is very deserving of the MLN scholarship.

“She encompasses quality patient care, being a valuable team player on the healthcare team, and making sound judgements,” she said. “She has juggled personal setbacks throughout nursing school while still meeting program expectations and doing well overall.

“The scholarship will definitely help offset some of her setbacks, while allowing her to continue to achieve her goal and reach the finish line of graduation in May.”

From Homeschool to Honor Society, Siblings Learn Together

December 21, 2020 | Campus News

Belle area siblings Kya and Jace Nilges were homeschooled together, and now they are continuing their education together at East Central College in Rolla.

They both took time off after high school to work before enrolling at ECC. They decided to take the plunge and enroll in Fall of 2019.

The siblings agreed that attending ECC turned out being an easier transition than either of them thought.

“I was worried about coming to college, but it ended up being totally fine and I wished I had done it sooner,” Kya explained.

“I was kind of worried I’d be out of my depth,” Jace added. “I expected it to be much harder than it was.”

Jace, who is 15 months older than Kya, said they both recognize the value of attending ECC because of the short drive from their hometown and the affordability of classes.

“We chose ECC for the proximity and the price. It’s also a good stepping-stone in getting credits to transfer. It makes it a lot easier and more efficient,” added Kya.

Kya plans on completing an associate degree in liberal studies, then she hopes to transfer to Stephen’s College to pursue Fashion Communication or Communication Design. Jace is leaning toward an associate degree in Radiologic Technology through ECC and the Rolla Technical Center.

Students with Honors

The duo was invited into Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for two-year colleges, based on their impressive GPAs. While neither one of them quite expected being inducted into an honor society, they both embraced the opportunity.

“I didn’t really know much about Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) before I was sent the invitation,” Jace said.

“It was kind of a surprise but then thought ‘well yeah, this sounds good!’ I’m glad I was invited.”

Kya noted that she was aware of PTK but she did not expect to be part of the organization. They were inducted into PTK in November.

“It’s really amazing to be a part of it,” she said. “I did not expect this good of grades. We were both homeschooled so I had no idea what my grades would be like starting out — It was unpredictable.”

They attribute part of their success to holding each other accountable in their schoolwork. Going to school with a sibling gives the opportunity of always having a study partner.

“It’s nice to have someone built-in to study with. You always have someone there to talk it through with. A lot of other people don’t have that,” Kya commented.

They also attribute some of their success to having chosen ECC.

“Attending ECC has given me a lot more opportunities and I have become way more confident in myself.” Kya said.

Jace had parting advice to those considering enrollment at ECC:

“Going to college seems scary but the scariest part is taking that first step. Once you’re actually in school, it just becomes normal. You are more capable than you think you are.”

ECC-Rolla Helps Students Prepare for Success

November 9, 2020 | Campus News ECC Rolla

East Central College in Rolla is committed to providing students with ample resources to succeed. One resource in particular are the Student Success Sessions.

Created and led by Jessica Robart, Student Success Coordinator at ECC Rolla, the 30-minute workshops offer varying topic, ranging from logging into and navigating Canvas, to being successful in online classes, and creating study groups.

In addition to Robart, the sessions are by led qualified tutors Susan Donaldson and Kirby Moreland.

“When students attend success sessions, they are very engaged,” Robart said.

“These workshops give students a chance to network with other students they don’t know or with faculty members. It’s great to build those relationships.”

The tips students learn in these sessions not only help them in their coursework, but also in future careers.

“We do career exploration as well,” Robart said. “Sometimes we will have someone from Missouri Career Centers come and do different types of career assessments with the students.”

She noted that students learn interview skills, resume writing sessions to help them write a resume or look over their resumes.

“We try to offer a wide variety of options for our students,” she added.

The Student Success Sessions also cover specific topics that faculty members recommend. Robart visits each class at least once at the beginning of the year to let students know about the services that the Success Center provides.

Robart explained that faculty sometimes offer students extra credit for attending the sessions.

“That collaboration between faculty and staff has been so helpful,” she added.

Workshops take place at Rolla Technical Center Room 139 from 10-10:30 a.m. Tuesdays. The sessions will continue until the Thanksgiving break.

For more information on Student Success Sessions, or tutoring at the Rolla locations, visit www.eastcentral.edu/rolla/ or contact Robart at Jessica.Robart@EastCentral.edu.
