More Than a Mascot: Real Falcons Nest at ECC

May 26, 2025 | Campus News

At East Central College, falcons aren’t just a mascot—they’re nesting above campus.

This spring, two American Kestrel families—small but fierce members of the falcon family—nested right here on campus. Thanks to nest boxes installed on the Health and Science (HS) Building and Hansen Hall, and support from the ECC Foundation, students and viewers got a front-row seat to something special.

Biology Professor Kevin Dixon spearheaded the live-streamed conservation project, giving people an inside look as the nesting season unfolded.
It started off strong. By late March, eggs appeared in both boxes, and cameras showed the kestrels hard at work—taking turns incubating, switching shifts, and preparing for hatch day.

“It’s so appropriate that kestrels are using our campus,” Dixon wrote in a March update. “They’re the smallest falcons—and falcons are our mascot. Plus, kestrel populations are in decline, so we’re doing our small part to help.”

Soon, five eggs hatched in the Hansen Hall nest—tiny, down-covered chicks squirming under their mom’s wing. The parents hunted and fed constantly, even delivering a small snake one day for a Sunday meal.

Then came an unexpected turn.
The World Bird Sanctuary, Valley Park, reached out: Six orphaned chicks had been rescued during a demolition project in Kansas City. The timing was right, and ECC’s HS box became the new home for the rescued chicks.

But not every nest followed the same path. At the HS box, things took a tough turn. One by one, the eggs were lost. The female broke the first of them while shifting positions. All of the eggs eventually met the same fate.

It looked like there would be no second successful nest.

The next question: Would the kestrel parents accept the foster chicks?
“It will be a crucial 48 hours to see if the female broods them,” Dixon wrote in a campus update. “But it looks like we’ll end up with a second batch of kestrel fledglings after all.”

Within a couple of hours, the female was feeding the new arrivals like they were her own.

That same day, the five hatchlings in the Hansen Hall box were banded by Jeff Meshach, deputy director for the World Bird Sanctuary, and Dixon, as part of a nationwide bird tracking initiative. Banding helps researchers monitor migration, population changes, and survival rates—an important step in protecting declining species like kestrels.

The project is still live, and anyone can follow along by searching either “eccbirds” or “ECC Kestrels” on YouTube to view the live stream from both nest boxes.

The young kestrels will remain in the nest for about three to four more weeks before taking flight on their own.
ECC’s falcons—both feathered and human—are now part of something bigger.

This project came together with help from the ECC Foundation, Facilities, IT, and faculty who care deeply about science, conservation, and education. It became more than a biology experiment—it became a story of second chances.

Just as ECC graduates recently spread their wings to take flight, the young kestrels will soon follow.
And like always—they’ll be cheered on from the nest.

Biology Students Gain Hands-On Experience in Wildlife Conservation

December 13, 2024 | Alumni Spotlight Campus News

East Central College students are taking their biology studies to new heights through hands-on learning opportunities—made possible by resources just steps away from campus.

As an official Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) collection site, ECC has partnered with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) to support white-tailed deer testing, giving students a front-row seat to real-world conservation efforts.

Biology instructor showing students deer head

For the past two deer seasons, ECC has served as a drop-off location where hunters can leave harvested deer heads for free CWD testing. Samples collected are sent to testing facilities, including the University of Missouri-Columbia, with results available online within weeks.

This year, Principles of Biology I and II students from Dr. Parvadha Acosta’s classes joined a critical wildlife monitoring project under the guidance of Kevin Dixon—ECC biology associate professor, experienced MDC volunteer, and avid deer hunter.

During three sessions so far, students have participated at varying levels, from observing the process to receiving hands-on guidance. Students involved include Ethan Agren, Alyvia Helm, Katelyn Temples, Addison Imhof, Trinity Morgan, Lily Purschke, and Adam Stevens. Instructor Dr. Clarissa Brown also took part in a testing session.

MDC biologist and ECC alumnus Raenhard Wesselschmidt introduced students to the impacts of CWD and demonstrated essential techniques, such as lymph node extraction, estimating deer age based on tooth growth and wear, and completing lab submission documentation.

Under his supervision, students practiced these techniques, gaining invaluable hands-on experience. Together, Wesselschmidt, Dixon, and the students processed 17 deer during one session. With deer hunting season running through January 15, students will have additional opportunities to participate before the 2024-2025 season concludes.

This partnership highlights ECC’s dedication to providing students with unique, experiential learning opportunities that connect classroom concepts to real-world challenges.

ECC students can earn an Associate of Arts degree in Biology and transfer to a four-year college or university to pursue careers in wildlife conservation, environmental science, zoology, public health, genetic research, ecology, biomedical research, and science education.

Union Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Earns Top 100 Honors

May 28, 2024 | Campus News

The East Central College Chi Delta chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society boasted amazing accomplishments this year, including being named a Top 100 Chapter.

The chapter earned Top 100 honors during the annual PTK Catalyst (International) Convention held in April in Orlando, Fla. Phi Theta Kappa has about 1,300 chapters across the globe, placing the Chi Delta chapter in elite company.

Although this is not the first time the ECC Union chapter has earned this distinction, it is the first since PTK changed program formatting several years ago, said Chapter Advisor Kevin Dixon.

“This is a goal that ECC President Dr. Jon Bauer asked us to work toward in a meeting with the advisors a few years ago, and we were honored and proud to achieve that status once again,” Dixon said.

The Top 100 status is earned through a combination of the scores from the students’ work on the Hallmark Awards for their College Project and Honors in Action programs.

Melanie Dixon, also a chapter advisor, attended the PTK Catalyst Convention with students Kylie Napier, Elijah Long, Ethan Sandstrom, and Nicholas Rucker.

Additionally, the Chi Delta chapter received a Hallmark Award for College Project, a recognition given to only the top 30 chapters in PTK each year. It is the first International Hallmark Award under the current format. The college project was developed by the chapter officers and spearheaded by Maxwell Reeves, chapter vice president.

ECC PTK member Nicholas Rucker received an individual award, the Distinguished Chapter Member, an accolade that just 30-40 members in all of PTK earn. Rucker was nominated by chapter officers in recognition of his participation in chapter programming last year.

The Chi Delta student officers for the 2023-24 academic year were Mary Daily (President), Maxwell Reeves (Executive Vice President), Sarah O’Bannon (Vice President for Public Relations/Fall 2023 graduate), and Enoch Schloeman (Vice President for Chapter Programs/Spring 2024 graduate).

In addition to Kevin and Melanie Dixon, Dr. Wendy Pecka also served as an advisor for PTK at ECC.

ECC annually nominates two to four students per site for the All-USA Team, which automatically qualifies the nominees for the All-Missouri Academic Team. Nominees complete a lengthy scholarship application, including information about their campus and community activities, and details and a letter of recommendation regarding a “significant endeavor” done during their time as a community college student.

Coca-Cola Academic Team

Smith’s Coca-Cola Academic Team honor is sponsored by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, which recognizes 50 Gold, 50 Silver and 50 Bronze Scholars with nearly $200,000 in scholarships annually. Each scholar also receives a commemorative medallion.

Smith and other Coca-Cola Academic Team members were recognized internationally during PTK’s annual convention, PTK Catalyst. Which was held in Columbus, Ohio, April 20-22.

“We thank the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation for recognizing these student leaders and for investing in their futures,” said Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner, president and CEO of PTK. “Scholarships like these are integral to the success of these students in reaching their educational and career goals.”

The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation celebrates and empowers visionary leaders who are refreshing the world by supporting more than 1,400 exceptional college students each year.

PTK is the premier honor society recognizing the academic achievement of students at associate degree-granting colleges and helping them to grow as scholars and leaders.
